Karlie Kloss Has Grand Plans for Life Purpose: Teaching Girls to Code and PIE

Karlie Kloss Covers WSJ Magazine December/January 2022 Digital by Ethan James Green AOC Fashion

Supermodel, philanthropist, new mom and — adoring, best- buddy wife to Joshua Kushner — Karlie Kloss covers the December/January digital covers of WSJ Magazine. Who better than Karlie Kloss to launch the new year of 2022 in these turbulent times.

Karlie is styled by Charlotte Collet in images by Ethan James Green for Inside Karlie Kloss’s New Life. In Karlie’s own words: “I wanted to change how I was using my job and my platform as a model.”

Elisa Lipsky-Karasz conducts the interview, which is rich in new thinking about the modeling industry and Karlie’s desire to transform herself yet again by switching modeling agencies, joining The Society, which also represents Amber Valletta, Adut Akech and personalities such as musician Willow Smith and reality star–turned-model Kendall Jenner.

“I wanted to change how I was using my job and my platform as a model.”

Karlie Kloss Investments

Kloss has invested in W Magazine, as well as in companies including Therabody, a wellness via technology leader; Mirror, the New York-based startup known for selling interactive workout mirrors, with Lulelemon also an investor; and Reformation, the sustainable fashion brand that had a rocky 2020 in a post-George Floyd world.

Accusations of “traumatizing” racism from staff members and store management against Yael Aflalo, who founded Reformation in 2009, created deep division around the Reformation brand and general public resulting in Aflalo stepping down from her CEO role in June 2020.

Karlie Kloss Activist and Philanthropist

Kloss now works with Greg Propper, the co-founder of Propper Daley, a strategic social-impact and consulting agency that advises brands and philanthropists, including stars like John Legend.

Their joint objective is to develop Karlie and other clients as forces for progressive social change.

Through Propper, Kloss is now connected to philanthropies such as New Profit, an organization that puts together venture philanthropy funds—essentially donations that are granted to social-impact entrepreneurs.

I’m somebody who is not formally educated. I am a student of life.”

Karlie has openly discussed the reality that because she was scooped up at a young age into the modeling industry, she is not formally educated.

Today the superstar is working with New Profit on an ambitious new initiative, the Postsecondary Innovation for Equity (PIE), that creates career pathways for nontraditional job candidates via investments in organizations that provide skills training and mentorships. Kloss can relate: “I’m somebody who is not formally educated. I am a student of life.”

Kode With Klossy

AOC has followed the full trajectory of Kloss’s career and social activism, including her Kode With Klossy project —a program Kloss launched in 2015 offering free computer coding camps to female-identifying and nonbinary 13- to 18-year-olds.

This summer 2021, Kode With Klossy awarded 3,000 scholarships to students from 70 countries, and Karlie’s working to expand it further. “It is all interwoven… [even though] to somebody on the outside it might not make sense,” Kloss tells WSJ Magazine.

15 Years of of Karlie Kloss news and modeling work can be found in our extensive Karlie Kloss’ AOC Archives. And we pull out Karlie’s Kode with Karlie organization, whose work with girls in STEM benefits the entire world. There are Twitter activists and then there is Karlie Kloss.

Like her mentor Christy Turlington, Karlie Kloss puts a capital ‘A’ on the word activism. To think that Karlie moved from 20 scholarships when she launched in New York in summer 2015 to over 3000 scholarships in 2021 is a tribute to women who get things done.

Yes, Kode With Klossy, along with the Malala Fund, was honored by Apple on International Women’s Day 2020.

6 MONCLER 1017 ALYX 9SM’S THIRD COLLECTION with Matthew Williams

Enter the world of 6 MONCLER 1017 ALYX 9SM, the brand’s third collection with designer Matthew Williams. While ‘duality’ is the pervasive buzz word about the creative vision behind the collection — and everywhere else in the world these days is “duality, duality, duality” — you have not entered the twilight zone.

The design vision is very straight-forward, unlike the philosophical concept of duality, which is very complex because the two opposing traits coexist simultaneously in the same entity.

Carlijn Jacobs Captures 'Island Life' in Barbados for Dazed Magazine Autumn 2021

Carlijn Jacobs Captures 'Island Life' in Barbados for Dazed Magazine Autumn 2021 AOC Fashion

AOC has praised W Magazine’s current Fall 2021 issue, and we must not neglect the Dazed Autumn 2021 issue. Ib Kamara is doing a fantastic job as the new editor in chief. I’ve read that the styling is too costumey and will just hop over that comment. Call AOC in love with the global village styling or theatrical styling direction of Kamara’s vision.

It’s through embracing some of these mixes that wearers create more relatable translations of the Dazed stories — in this case ‘Island Life’, styled by Imruh Asha and shot in Barbados by Carlijn Jacobs [IG].

I will never forget my partner grabbing his daughter’s life preserver and putting it on his head as he started a Conga line with his son and daughter in a very posh resort in Trinidad. It was amazing how they brought strangers together as more and more people joined into their musical celebration of evening.

I hate to tell stuffy white people that the creative celebration of joy that is the bedrock of Black and Brown life is just getting started. You don’t have to jump on this train, but I am positive that we are looking at a long run.

Adut Akech Electrifies in Fall 2021 Modern Luxury by Chris Colls ELLE US August

Supermodel Adut Akech is breathtaking, posting in vibrant, modern luxury clothes for the August 2021 issue of ELLE US. Photographer Chris Colls [IG] captures Adut, who just became a global ambassador for Estee Lauder, with styling by Alex White.

In her interview Adut Akech Is Electric Roxanne Fequiere refreshes memories about Adut’s journey out of South Sudan. We’ve told that story many times on AOC in the last four years, so head-on over to ELLE to read Adut’s story of roadside birth on on Christmas Day in 1999 — somewhere between South Sudan and the Kenyan refugee camp Kakuma.

The camp Kakuma, that has birthed several successful models, was her home, until Adelaide, Australia welcomed her, her mom and five siblings. Adut’s father died in the fighting in South Sudan, and her aunt was already living in Adelaide.

In Adut’s own words:

“I was born on the way to Kenya, and I haven’t been to Sudan since.

Adut’s fashion industry success is legendary by now. At a time when models of color are rising everywhere in fashion, Adut is a superstar. Her Estee Lauder appointment makes her platinum grade in the world of modeling and will absolutely affect her bank account, Adut is also a member of the new VS Collective, joining other high-credentialed women to do what, none of us knows. They are advisers.

In another of Adut’s famous stories touched in her ELLE interview, in the car ride from the Adelaide airport to her new home, the now supermodel turned to her mother and made a vow: “Now that we’re here, I’m going to get an education. I’m going to buy you a car and a house. I’m going to make something of myself.”

That life checklist is complete for Adut Akech, who tells us something more about her character when she says: “I will always be a refugee.”

To say that there’s whole lotta love for this young woman is an understatement. Hey, Adut, how about a ride in Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShip Two Unity 22? Now THAT would be memorable for a refugee model. You could raise money for your future project in [South] Sudan. ~ Anne

As Estee Lauder Ambassador, Adut Akech Brings Ubuntu Values to Our Needy World

As Estee Lauder Ambassador, Adut Akech Brings Ubuntu Values to Our Needy World AOC Blackness

Supermodel Adut Akech is now an Estee Lauder global ambassador, joining other famous women like Karlie Kloss, Carolyn Murphy, Anok Yai and Ana de Armas in a role that is a truly prestigious and long-lasting business and human-values relationship. Estee Lauder is known for paying ambassadors very well and this new achievement for Akech will help to cement her financial future.

Adut Akech Understands Ubuntu

At age 21, Adut has mastered the art of — or is innately gifted in — speaking to activist values with honesty and grace. Consciously or unconsciously, Adut embraces ‘ubuntu’. The Zulu concept of ‘ubuntu’ — expressed Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu — literally means that a person is a person through other people.

Condensed “ubuntu’ is a concept that believes 'I am because of who we all are’ — and that includes you, too. As members of the human family, we don’t live in silos apart from each other, but connected to and impacted by each other’s values and actions. I feel your love and it helps me thrive, and I also feel your hate or indifference which can be spiritually, psychologically and physically crushing.

Now 21 and stepping up as an Estee Lauder ambassador, Adut Akech is the representation she once sought for herself as a young woman of color. "It means a lot to me, because this is something that I never saw – it's something that I never thought I would be able to do," she says. "Even though I had wished and dreamed to do it, I didn’t see it. And now in the position I'm in, I get to be that representation – someone for others to look up to."
