Bali-Based Isa Boulder Fall 2021 Campaign by Carlijn Jacobs Expands Consciousness

The Isa Boulder brand delivers an intoxicating Fall 2021 ad campaign that marries tightly to the brand’s DNA. Cecilia Basari and Yuli Suri were two friends living in Bali, with no experience in swimwear. The two women had never worn bikinis in public, writes Vogue Paris.

Two years later, Basari and Suri are operating at a level way above buzz. Each piece is made by local craftsmen in Bali from recycled premium fabric.

“Providing a bespoke service is definitely something we are proud of because we are able to make something for our wearers that is personally made with them in mind. By producing in small quantities we are also able to ensure that we do not overproduce and have unnecessary stock.” the duo told VP.

The goddess-inspired draping of Isa Boulder garments gives the label a distinctive, naturalist positioning.

For Fall 2021 — the collection featured here — models Greta Hajwos and Lizette Pinto are styled by Morgane Camille Nicolas. Photographer Carlijn Jacobs [IG] captures the sea siren, nature goddess fall knitwear that features a large, open-knit pattern named ‘Urchin’.

The ruching signature continues in Isa Boulder, but the applause for the label’s knits is now just as strong as the original swimwear collection. W Magazine cites the brand as being commercial and yet ‘extreme’, perhaps because what it does, Isa Boulder does with conviction.

“We try to play with these stereotypes of sexy garments and make them more tactile and somehow sexy,” Basari told ‘W’. “But the starting point for most of our collections would be the craft of it. I’ve been obsessed with our yarn for maybe two years now. I love knitwear because of the different kinds of knitting techniques, even crochet, and all the different ways you can explore the material.”

The organic nature of the pieces is undeniable, with the designer duo explaining that the team of artisans does not work from sketches. Rather, they drape fabrics across mannequins to form new shapes inspired by both nature and the female body. Basari notes that one must also understand the yarns and how they perform on the body. W writes:

“Since every crochet piece the brand creates is entirely handmade in Bali, Basari feels she is able to support her local community, and in turn, its local ecosystem. Sustainability is key for the brand, and Isa Boulder is trying to make an impact by using a production method with less waste.”
