Spring 2022 Self-Portrait London Women Like Bella Hadid CARE About Our Earth

Bella Hadid’s sensual poses in Self-Portrait’s new campaign are littered over cyberspace. The WWD Exclusive has already traveled far and wide in support of Self-Portrait’s spring 2022 collection, revealed in London Tuesday September 2021.

Bella Hadid poses as the Self-Portrait woman of many dimensions: she is self-aware, self-indulgent, self-searching, self-determined, self-expressive, self-sufficient. “When I think of the Self-Portrait woman, I never just have one person in mind — for me, the joy of what I do comes from designing for women with different personalities, different attitudes and different ways of living their lives,” Self-Portrait founder and creative director Han Chong said in a statement. “I wanted to celebrate this spirit with my new collection and wanted to present the different facets of the Self-Portrait woman with a series of images of Bella Hadid transforming into varying sides of her character.”

Nice words Mr. Chong, but AOC will add to your narrative, and we hope you don’t mind. We love Bella, and yours is an interesting brand story. Lucky for you, Anne remembered that Michelle Obama likes your clothes.

US President Biden is addressing the UN General Assembly in New York City today — Tuesday.

Five years ago, our beloved and fabulous former first lady Michelle Obama also addressed the UN General Assembly from a satellite location at Broadway’s Jacob Theater.

Mrs. Obama was wearing a Self-Portrait dress, and she got us thinking. These nice quotes about self-actualized women miss the reality that in 2021 we are warrior women in action.

We self-actualized women want people to know that the Self-Portrait website has a significant section devoted to Ethics and Sustainability. In today’s world, loving ourselves and marching to our own drum confirms that we CARE deeply about the environment and its people living on Planet Earth.

Mr. Chong, you should be willing to risk the possibility of offending women who don't believe in climate change and global warming.

AOC doesn't want to be divisive, but Michelle Obama didn't wear your dress to speak before the UN because you are afraid of offending people.

Mrs. Obama wore your Self-Portrait brand because she is a warrior woman of style and substance, and she likes what you stand for. AOC didn't remember your brand because it was about ourselves or our own self-reflection in a beautiful mirror.

AOC remembered Self-Portrait as a brand that CARED about the environment and proudly uses REPREVE®, the recycled performance fiber, resulting in garments made from between 35% to 100% recycled materials.

We CARE that you proudly promote Self-Portrait's commitment to animal welfare and leather, wool, cashmere and mohair that are only sourced from producers that practise good animal husbandry. That statement may not please all the people who want more action from Self-Portrait, but you are marching down the road to good sustainability practices in a complex world.

We CARE -- and we'll bet AOC wrote about Self-Portrait -- and your collab with Green Earth Cleaning, which uses a silicone-based, a non-toxic and non-hazardous alternative to traditional chemical-based dry cleaning. Bells are ringing in our heads and the search is on.

This is probably why we read your WWD press post and saw Bella's images traveling far and wide across fashion blogs, while we said: "Wait up. We know this brand, and they have a much better story to tell about self-actualized women who CARE. We are not stuck in ourselves; we are looking outwards and we are activists, too.”

We CARE that Bella Hadid took to Instagram in February 2021, now that she has donated 200,000 trees to One Tree Planted. Bella's trees are planted in Peru.

For the record, Bella's been planting trees and offsetting her air travel for several years now. We know because AOCwrote about her commitment.

AOC wishes that it was fashionable to share our values beyond self-love. When a good brand like Self-Portrait won't do it, we'll step in to give them a shove forward.

'No’ we weren't paid to write this post. Nor do we get free clothes.

We are only setting the record straight about Self-Portrait because they are trying to be a better business that is committed to ethics and sustainability.

We don't expect women to wear clothes that don't reflect their style and our true selves. We do want women to REFUSE to wear clothes that don't care about our planet, whenever possible. The sooner sustainability is as fashionable as sexy, the better off Mother Earth will be.

AOC's Smart Sensuality women are smart, sexy and with great heart. This has been our DNA since 2007.

If you are truly a self-actualized woman, you've got the heart part down, because it's needed now more than ever. We do not ignore the sirens going off around us, as we ponder our own vision of our wonderfulness and self-fulfilling life journey. Those values belong to a Modern Values woman, not a Cultural Creatives one.

Having a heart that acts and doesn’t just sit around bleeding is better for your self-image than any dress you will ever buy.

Lucky for us, Self-Portrait fills every bucket for a Self-Actualized, 21st century woman, and in their silence around values in this campaign, we will sound the trumpet for them. Now about your agency, Mr. Chong . . . ~ Anne
