Fresh Off JW Anderson Genius Collab, Moncler Acquires Stone Island

Monday’s Dec. 7 announcement that Moncler and Stone Island were joining forces in a €1.15 billion EUR (approximately $1.39 billion USD) financial transaction for 100 percent of Stone Island’s shares, created another opportunity to share the Moncler x JW Anderson images. DAME's 'Bleed Red. Think Green' Tampon String Showing Campaign Hits London Buses

Britain’s DAME eco-friendly tampons have generated plenty of holiday spirit on London buses with the message ‘Bleed Red. Think Green.’ Perfect! There’s nothing better than a Dame who knows what she’s doing. Note that this DAME ships to the US and throughout Europe.

“Tampons and period products have been hidden in the shadows for too long,” DAME co-founder Celia Pool tells Dazed. “Still today, major brands boast on their boxes about silent wrappers. Why? There's no shame in rustling a tampon wrapper in the next door cubicle. Periods are not shameful.”

Even though DAME has an excellent reputation in Britain with strong sustainability and product integrity credentials, launching the campaign was not easy. Veterinary nurse, law student and vegan beauty blogger Demi Colleen photographed herself standing in her underwear with a visible tampon string hanging down. Scandalous!

“We faced many roadblocks,” explains co-founder Alec Mills who says he was told that the ad was too ‘racy’ and would encounter problems broadcasting it on breakfast shows. “Many iterations of our advert got rejected. This clearly demonstrates the vast cultural chasm between what is happening with women’s bodies and how they are portrayed in reality.”

“This tampon string on the side of the bus is momentous, in that it hasn't happened before, but it's also utterly boring and normal. No one bats an eyelid when they see a tissue on the side of the bus, and it should be the same for a tampon string,” says Pool. “If every parent and carer were this cool about periods, period shame would be eradicated in one generation.”

Léa Seydoux Channels Monroe by Alasdair McLellan for Vogue Paris Christmas 2020 Edition

Léa Seydoux is the special guest editor of the Vogue Paris Christmas 2020 edition, photographed on three covers by Alasdair McLellan (IG) Craig McDean and Inez and Vinoodh. In the McLellan images, Seydoux channels Marilyn Monroe, with styling by Aleksandra Woroniecka.

Seydoux is one of the few humans who has actually seen the constantly-delayed Bond film ‘No Time to Die’. Making her second appearance as psychiatrist Dr. Madeleine Swann, first introduced in ‘Spectre’, the December 2020/January 2021 Vogue Paris guest editor would have to be clairvoyant to know when the film will actually hit movie theaters.

Originally scheduled for a November 2019 release, MGM is reportedly paying $1 million in interest every month, with no revenue in sight. The earliest in-theaters opening date now appears to be April 2021.

Annemarieke van Drimmelen's 'The Female Gaze' Focus for Zara Lingerie

Annemarieke van Drimmelen's 'The Female Gaze' Focus for Zara Lingerie

ZARA’s new lingerie collection launched at the end of October, as a collection of elegant must-haves priced for higher-income shoppers. The Spanish retailer’s first intimates collection launched with more than 125 pieces, including bras, bodysuits, panties and elegant innerwear.

Prices began at $17.90 for panties and $199 for a silk pajama top.

“A parallel femininity is explored through a more ‘everyday’ approach, designed with the intent of being worn from morning through night,” the company said in a press release.

What did stand out in Zara’s lingerie collection launch is their ‘The Female Gaze’ approach to photography, starring models Edita Vilkeviciute, Karly Loyce and Sara Blomqvist. Ludivine Poiblanc styled the campaign with creative direction by Fabien Baron. Photographer Annemarieke van Drimmlen is behind the lens.

Pierpaolo Piccioli Was Woke Before Naming Zendaya As New Brand Face

‘Euphoria’ star Zendaya has joined the Valentino stable of celebs and voices representing the brand. The star shared the news, saying that she is “honoured to have been chosen as the face of Valentino,” and “so excited to begin this amazing collaboration with Pierpaolo and the entire Valentino family.”.

WWD delivered the message that Valentino creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli wants “to make the brand more in sync with the times and more inclusive, while maintaining its storied codes.”

From his perspective, Piccioli wants “to resignify the brand and how it is generally perceived. It’s like a different take on a familiar landscape.” Zendaya “embodies and represents what Valentino is and stands for today,” Piccioli explained to the press. “She is a powerful and fierce young woman that uses her talent and her work to express herself, her values and her generation as well.”

As an actor, the recent Emmy Awards youngest winner of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Zendaya’s role in ‘Euphoria’, joined Viola Davis as only the second Black female actor to win an Emmy in the high-profile category.

Valentino Isn’t New to Supporting Black Creatives and Culture

Valentino and Piccioli are walking a needlessly treacherous balance beam in AOC’s opinion.

Perhaps because we follow the fashion industry so closely, we know Valentino and Piccioli himself have existing credentials in their support of Black creatives and models. I would have positioned that existing pedigree as part of their new announcement about Zendaya.

Piccioli’s relationship with Black models is at the top of luxury fashion houses. In his spectacular January 2019 couture show, the creative director and designer featured a dominating majority Black models extravaganza, reflecting a historic commitment to Black model representation. Vanessa Friedman reported that of 65 models, 45 were Black.

“As a designer I have a voice,” Piccioli said in the moment. “Hopefully a loud one. I want to use it.”

Fine — we are accustomed to marketing manipulation — but when Roberta Flack’s ‘The First Time’ hit the runway, tears welled up in more than one set of fashionista eyes. The beauty of the January 2019 moment existed in the reality that Pierpaolo Piccioli’s gesture was not tokenistic.

Joining Naomi Campbell were Aaliyah Hydes, Adut Akech, Ajak Deng, Akiima, Alek Wek, Alyssa Traore, Annibelis Baez, Anyelina Rosa, Assa Baradji, Ayak Veronica Bior, Blesnya Minher, Duckie Thot, Eftagine Fevilien, Grace Bol, Hannah Shakespeare, Hiandra Martinez, Janaye Furman, Judy Kinuthia, Karly Loyce, Litza Velloz, Lineisy Fatou Liya Kebede, Jobe, Lisette Moriello, Mayowa Nicholas, Miqueal-Simone Williams, Montero, Naomi Chin Wing, Nichole Atiero, Rouguy Faye, Niko Riam, Nyara Aboja, Saba Koj, Sana Diouf, Selena Forrest, Shanelle Nyasiase, Sompra Antonio, Tami Williams, Ugbad Abai, and Veronica Cabral.

Pierpaolo Piccioli’s collaboration with Lemlem’s founder Liya Kebede on puffer gowns for Moncler also comes to mind. Kebede’s Ethiopian artisans created colorful borders on the gowns, like those found on the ‘habesha kemis’ traditional Ethiopian dress.

AOC’s only point is that there’s no need for Valentino to communicate a message that’s it’s a luxury brand jumping on the Black representation bandwagon.

Valentino was ‘woke’ on this issue before most other luxury brands. They don’t deserve an award for being among the first to take a leadership position around Black beauty and creativity. But Valentino could have celebrated their ongoing commitment to racial justice and Black representation by announcing Zendaya as a next step in this long-overdue journey.

It would be like Anne of Carversville announcing our commitment to Black models, when we’ve been fighting for them for a decade. Nobody deserves a bow on this issue, but Valentino is not new to this long-overdue party. It didn’t take a summer of widespread protest and discontent to prompt Valentino to action. Nor did it take embarrassing condemnation from Black leaders and racial justice activists pointing out the obvious racism in their product offerings — as experienced by Gucci and Prada. ~ Anne

Harry Styles' Vogue Cover by Tyler Mitchell Creates Second Issue Run, 40,000 New Subscriptions

English singer, songwriter and actor Harry Styles is partial to gender-bending attire, much as Mick Jagger, Kurt Kobain and David Bowie were back in the day. We’re talking 50 years ago.

For people of a certain age Harry Styles being the first man to go solo on Vogue’s December cover — or any American Vogue cover — was not worthy of breaking the Internet. Wrong.

Harry Styles is considered to be a fashion provocateur, given his status as major muse to Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele. For fashionistas, Harry Styles wearing a dress or two for Vogue was not a big deal, but even Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez felt compelled to come to his defense.

“Perhaps for some people it provokes some anger or insecurity around masculinity/femininity/etc. If it does, then maybe that’s part of the point. Sit with that reaction and think about it, examine it, explore it, engage it, and grow with it, “ the all-knowing beyond her years, pundit-politico advised Twitter-world.

In fact, the Harry Styles interview with Vogue’s Hamish Bowles is quite good, so read it. Camilla Nickerson styles the shoot with images by Tyler Mitchell. Move onto Vogue to see the product credits and read Playtime With Harry Styles’.

“Clothes are there to have fun with and experiment with and play with. What’s really exciting is that all of these lines are just kind of crumbling away,” Styles says. “There’s so much joy to be had in playing with clothes. I’ve never really thought too much about what it means—it just becomes this extended part of creating something.”
