Sabyasachi Mukherjee Shares Sabyasachi Jewellery Story in Vogue Arabia March 2022

Anne of Carversville has been a fan of Sabyasachi Mukherjee since 2017, watching India’s most prominent luxury design house bring the rich heritage of India to a global audience.

As Vogue Arabia notes in this new fashion story, beautifully-crafted jewelry is an integral part of the House of Sabyasachi’s unequivocally Indian brand heritage. As much as any element in Sabyasachi DNA, jewelry is integral to the brand’s main focus on authenticity and traditional Indian craftsmanship at the highest level.

In this fashion story for Vogue Arabia, model Ylenia Minniti is styled by Ahmed Rashwan in images by Mannbutte [ IG ].

Today Sabyasachi Mukherjee has a growing exponentially following in much of India, the Middle East and parts of the western world with its designs and jewelry. Sabyasachi has installed shops at Bergdorf in 2020 and 2021 and also collaborated with H&M on a special collection.

In recent years [See Vogue India article after images] Sabyasachi Mukherjee is devoted to the restoration of lost craftsmanship across India.

Sensing a loss of direction for the art of creating Indian jewelry, Sabyasachi is reviving age-old crafts and techniques of jewelry making by modernizing and innovating, while creating an ode to the craft. Mukherjee has always been an innovator. “In my late teens I started a tiny side hustle where I made costume jewelry with beads and glass and feathers and stone,” he says.

Of equal importance is another Indian heritage piece that Sabyasachi holds dear to his heart. By launching Save the Sari [Saree] in 2009, Sabyasachi promotes a model of economic sustainability for local craftspeople and artisan communities in the designer’s hometown of Kolkata and beyond in India.

Will One De Beers Cullinan Blue Diamond Price Exceed Five Monets?

Will One De Beers Cullinan Blue Diamond Price Exceed Five Monets? AOC Jewelry News

The De Beers Cullinan Blue

On April 27, The De Beers Cullinan Blue diamond will be auctioned by Sotheby’s Hong Kong. This extraordinary 15.10 carat step-cut blue diamond has a preauction estimate of $48 million and could generate a significantly higher price, leaving five Monet paintings in the dust in the value of acquisitions in the art world.

In April 2021 an exceptional rough stone weighing 39.34 carats was discovered at South Africa’s Petra Diamonds Cullinan mine. This phenomenal blue diamond was sold in July 2021 for $40.1 million to the De Beers and Diacore partnership, achieving a price of $1,021,357 per carat.

Cullinan is known as the world’s most important source of blue diamonds, as well as being the birthplace of the 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond, which was cut to form the 530-carat Great Star of Africa.

The operation also yielded the 317-carat Second Star of Africa. They are the two largest diamonds in the British Crown Jewels. De Beers divested itself of the mine in 2007, part of a larger business strategy to turn to the marketing and selling of diamonds, while turning over mining to more local ownership.

It’s noteworthy that $40 million of the $48 million estimate did go to the Petra mining operation. There is significant loss in ‘waste’ created in cutting the De Beers Cullinan Blue. Presumably there is some value in the ‘waste’ but common sense suggests that the perfect blue diamond will sell at a price higher than $48 million, the highest estimate ever for a blue diamond.

“Cuore Dolomite” was created among the majestic, snowy mountains of Trento in northern Italy. It was captured through the three lenses of IPhone13 pro: Wid, Ultrawide and 3x.

In 2018, the New York Times shared a feature ‘36 Hours in the Dolomites’.

Dolomite crystals are also used in jewelry, although they are considered to be fragile with a low and variable of hardness of 3.5 to 4. “Faceted dolomites would appeal most to collectors of unusual gems or aficionados of the art of gem cutting,” writes the Gem Society. AOC has tried unsuccessfully to validate the stones used in this fashion story.

Chopard's Caroline Scheufele Will Bring Zambia's 'Insofu' Emerald to a Life of Luxury

Chopard's Caroline Scheufele Will Bring Zambia's 'Insofu' Emerald to a Life of Luxury AOC Jewelry News

The Chopard ‘Insofu’ Emerald weighs in the size of a champagne bottle. It’s named for elephants in Zambia’s Bantu language.

“The size and quality of the crystal make it a rare find indeed,” stated Sean Gilbertson, director of Gemfields, noting that it was also “setting a historic milestone for traceability back to the mine-of-origin, a holy grail for consumers” seeking reassurances on the credentials of their stones as it is the first emerald of this size and purity to meet traceability requirements.

“By purchasing a raw stone, we are able to follow its entire journey through to final creation. Chopard will cut the raw emerald and collect all the cut gems emerging from it….We ensure a complete chain of traceability, which is rare for [such] stones,” said Chopard’s copresident and artistic director Caroline Scheufele who noted that a “fully integrated supply chain” was what made “these treasures of nature so valuable to our clientele,” who despite the COVID-19 pandemic had shown “strong resilience and loyalty” to the house.

AOC has followed Chopard’s Caroline Scheufele for years, and we value deeply her leadership mission in the arena of sustainability, workers rights, and transparency of Chopard stones from discovery to individual ownership. Scheufele recalled her feeling at the discovery of the Insofu emerald as “surpassing any emotion [she] had ever known.”
