‘Avedon & Me’ Curated by Tyler Mitchell

Gagosian’s first project with Mitchell will open at Paris Photo 2024, November 6-10, 2024 Grand Palais, Paris Booth B22. ‘Avedon & Me’ is curated by the artist, featuring a blend of his own photography alongside fellow Gagosian photographer Richard Avedon.

Mitchell selected Avedon’s 1946 mirror self-portrait with Baldwin for the 2023 Avedon 100 centennial exhibition at Gagosian New York.

The presentation is centered on Avedon’s works from the 1960s alongside a selection of Mitchell’s photographs from the past six years, including some not previously exhibited.

Central to this famous era of civil rights activism in America is Avedon’s groundbreaking collaboration with James Baldwin on ‘Nothing Personal’ (1964), a book that pairs Baldwin’s words and Avedon’s photographs, offering powerful reflections on race, identity, and society.

Mega star Beyoncé covered the September 2018 issue of American Vogue, with young (23) photographer Tyler Mitchell behind the lens.

Calling Mitchell ‘brilliant,’ the 36-year-old mega star explained to Vogue that she wanted to ensure a new perspective was being shown to Vogue readers.

"Until there is a mosaic of perspectives coming from different ethnicities behind the lens, we will continue to have a narrow approach and view of what the world actually looks like," she said. "It’s important to me that I help open doors for younger artists. There are so many cultural and societal barriers to entry that I like to do what I can to level the playing field, to present a different point of view for people who may feel like their voices don’t matter."
