Vogue Greece January 2024 'the Animal Issue' by Richard Phibbs with Kris Grikaite
/One of the world’s best-known animal whisperers — photographer Richard Phibbs — arrives today. He brings images that convince us all to breathe deeply and focus on Vogue Greece’s January 2024 ‘the animal issue’. For a little while, the angst about our globe lifts.
Top model Kris Grikaite is visually at peace with creatures more devoted to humans, than we are to them in most cases. Nicholas Georgiou styled the shoot and he is equally impacted by the experience, as the rest of the cast.
“The Vogue Greece January issue welcomes the New Year in the sweetest and most caring way, with an issue dedicated to our love of animals. Famous photographer @richardphibbs, a known advocate of animal rights, captures @kris_grikaite with animals that now live in shelters waiting to be fostered or adopted.”
The animals are not sedated or harmed in any way, abiding by all international agreements around animal welfare.

/Model Anna Cleveland channels the spirit of opera singer Maria Callas, who would have turned 100 on December 2 in Vogue Greece’s December 2023 cover story, lensed by Richard Phibbs
Nicholas Georgiou styles Cleveland, who as Maria Callas expresses ‘La Divina’s’ appetite for a luxurious, glamorous lifestyle and fashion diva status, in addition to her global fame as an opera star.
Callas’ life is now the focus of Chilean auteur Pablo Larraín’s upcoming biopic ‘Maria’, starring Angelina Jolie. Early images released of Jolie as Callas bear a stunning resemblance to the opera diva, and she will wear some of Callas’ real clothes in the film.

/As an American — and long before I launched Anne of Carversville in 2007 — Ralph Lauren represented the American dream to me. Lauren has successfully woven America’s stories into the very fabric of his brand, creating a unique narrative like no other American designer.
Today, an older, wiser, and a more empathetic Ralph Lauren stands at the crossroads of American democracy. In the same moment, I am pouring over the details of American history on a daily basis and grabbing every creative opportunity to talk about them.
When you put Polo Ralph Lauren together with Richard Phibbs [IG] as photographer, Anne’s day is derailed as I decide what to write. Poor Phibbs. He always inspires deep thinking at AOC.
AOC totally supports taking some liberties with campaign visuals, but I also sense an obligation for AOC to share facts of history along the way. Ralph Lauren has mastered this art of visual inclusivity and Richard Phibbs has some of the keenest instincts I know about when taking this path of “how history could have been if only there were more of us and fewer of them.”

/Banana Republic’s Spring 2023 March campaign drop takes us to Taos, New Mexico, with photographer Richard Phibbs [IG] bringing his deep understanding of humanity, nature and ancestral roots to the campaign.
A currently incomplete model list includes Ella Eckerson, Louise de Chevigny, and Maria Borges. We will fill out the rest over the weekend, with other pieces of this Banana Republic Spring 2023 campaign.
Personally, I feel that Banana Republic is back on the right track, and I don’t want them to mess up. And a part of me was wondering how Phibbs could go to Taos and not have adobe buildings or any shots connected to Georgia O’Keeffe in the imagery. How about an indigenous model or two?
The photographer did all of the above in the Banana Republic Spring 2023 campaign. But it’s a compliment to Richard Phibbs that I refused to believe that this sequence of images constituted the campaign.
They’re lovely but also a very incomplete story for him. Not for 80-90% of the photographers I can name, but not Phibbs. What matters to me also matters to him. ~ Anne

/Grace Jones is now age-74, and her age-defying figure struts into the limelight as the new face for luxury lingerie brand Wolford.
Appearing in images by Richard Phibbs [IG] that define the word ‘fierce’, sporting the stretchy, body-clinging Fatal ‘quick change artist’ dress.
On Grace Jones, the Fatal dress is human sculpture in motion. The length of the dress can be altered and transformed into a skirt or even a top.

/The Banana Republic Holiday 2022 Campaign is terrific, as are the images by Richard Phibbs [IG]. I see the Polo vibe here, but it feels like sound ground Banana is standing on.
Note that as recently as August 2022, Fast Company was asking if Banana Republic will ultimately be forced to change its name. This question comes within a larger America’s public school’s movement whereby students, parents and some civic leaders argue they shouldn’t have to go to a school named after presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
AOC does not support the eradication of all references to America’s past, because our past is very complicated. Our role is to move forward.
The cast of the Banana Republic campaign includes Cherokee Jack, Chinchin Hsu, Louise de Chevigny, Nya Gatbel and Ryan Porter and the campaign was shot in Iceland.
Many in the cast have worked on other Banana Republic campaigns this year.

/Lauren Wasser regularly forgets that she doesn’t have legs. "All the time," she says, laughing. "And my girlfriend forgets, my mother forgets... When I’m wearing trousers, you can’t even tell." In fact, her gleaming gold prosthetic limbs have become an integral part of her identity.
The Paris sitdown takes place exactly 10 years to the day since the golden girl Wasser was first hospitalised with toxic-shock syndrome [TSS]. The model went into organ failure, had a heart attack and underwent a double-leg amputation.
Lauren Wasser is back now as ‘the Girl with the Golden Legs’, working with luxury brands including closing the Louis Vuitton Cruise 2023 show in San Diego, Wasser’s birth place.

/A breeze is blowing through fashion collections and marketing as humans adjust to pre-pandemic life. Not that reality is faraway, mind you, or that a decade of streetwear’s dominance is over.
Coincidentally, posting images of the just launched on September 15 Polo Originals collection by Ralph Lauren comes on the heels of sharing incredibly-glamorous images of the spring 2023 glamorous Schiaparelli collection.
I can imagine critics calling the Ralph Lauren Polo Originals campaign a celebration of robber baron wealth. Photographer Richard Phibbs [IG] made harmonious artistry out of these images starring Hamid Onifade, Hugh Laughton-Scott, Kit Butler, Rishi Robin.
To me, I see a modern, honoring nod to traditions and classics — to wellmade clothes that are designed to last.

Cherokee Jack by Richard Phibbs for Man of Metropolis | Minnesota History of Mankato Hangings AOC Fashion
Ford model Cherokee Jack [IG] — home agency Ignite Models in Minneapolis —covers the current issue of Man of Metropolis magazine, edited by Seth Travis. John Moore styles Cherokee Jack in images by Richard Phibbs [IG].
Anne is totally derailed by these images. 110% derailed.
Anne of Carversville rarely gets behind new models, except for the refugee models out of Africa. We are their biggest champion in a collective sense.
Once AOC opens the Pandora’s box of featuring new models, it’s a potential onslaught of inquiries and unsolicited portfolio links. My daily reality will be double trouble — worse than requests for free-ride posts on AOC linking out to paying clients for the writer. We deny them all.
However, within the context of this moment — how my brain is operating on July 15, 2021 — it’s impossible for me not to comment on the visceral response I’m having to the ‘take my breath away images’ of Cherokee Jack by Richard Phibbs.
When high-integrity images are so beautiful that they move me to tears, I must respond to the gift.
When through its exquisite beauty, a fashion story quietly addresses the brutal facts of American history and the suffering meted out to native peoples in America, my words cannot possibly do that fashion story justice.
When images prompt me to apologize on behalf of OUR [Cherokee Jack’s and mine in 2021] country to his ancestors, the pictures have impact way beyond their initial exposure in a high-quality, men’s lifestyle magazine.
The editorial serves as a reminder of how a model and a stylist and a photographer can work together in perfect synchronicity — with an editor who shares the same vision. It also helps that the photographer has the technical and artistic vision of Richard Phibbs.
Peony Girl Told Me I Was Needlessly Harsh
My three-year-old alter ego Peony Girl gave me a lecture last night — suggesting that perhaps I was needlessly harsh regarding the new Gigi Hadid editorial in the August issue of Harper’s Bazaar. To be honest, my three-year-old self had me wavering in her argument, and I considered an apology.
No more. I am moving Gigi’s editorial next to this one, and rest my case. Once I saw Hadid’s video and the joy in her eyes, I felt the emptiness of the Harper’s fashion story. These images reaffirm my written response.
Gigi Hadid and Cherokee Jack both feel to me like people of awareness. There is nobility in Cherokee Jack’s images that Gigi doesn’t exude, but I know she understands and would appreciate my commentary.
Hadid processes images like these and feels them deeply, too. In her own words, she is less overtly emotional on issues of justice than her sister Bella. But it’s always been clear to me that Gigi Hadid feels deeply, even if she is more guarded than Bella [who has also learned to button up attitudes and emotions in the glare of a public life.]
None of this human capacity for ubuntu came through in Gigi’s images. Nor did the joy she expressed in the video. The final product was dour, dour, dour, as I wrote.
