TIME 100 2021: Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) AOC She

Nigerian-American, MIT PHD, Harvard undergrad economist Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been named to the TIME 100 list of the world’s most influential people. Okonjo-Iweala is the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), appointed after the inauguration of US President Joe Biden.

Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, give TIME testimony about leader Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, asking the question: what will it take to vaccinate the world? “Unity, cooperation and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala,” is their answer.

As Chair of the Board of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance (2016 – 2020) and also AU COVID-19 Special Envoy and WHO COVID-19 Special Envoy, Okonjo-Iweala has existing skills and knowledge around global vaccine efforts.

Harry and Meghan remind us that “her job affects every person, family and community.” They continue, writing that “to end the pandemic, we must work together to equip every nation with equitable vaccine access.”

Today only one quarter of the world’s 8 billion people are fully-vaccinated, and Dr. Ngozi Oonjo-Iweala has a tough job ahead. Harry and Meghan write that besides guidance from strong leaders like their friend Ngozi, we have a global duty to find compassion for one another.

How do you get a small rancher to give up cutting trees for pasture and instead produce high-value and sustainable agricultural products without the requisite skills, money, or access to markets? A new initiative is trying to solve this problem in the Brazilian Amazon.

Called the Agroforestry and Restoration Accelerator, this nature-based carbon removal project aims to help small farmers diversify production and reach new markets, focusing on reforestation and regenerative agroforestry while also advancing economic development. The initiative, announced in early September by U.S-based tech giant Amazon in partnership with nonprofit The Nature Conservancy (TNC), will set up a project in Pará state, home to 9% of the world’s tropical forest area and 40% of Amazon deforestation — the highest rate of forest loss in Brazil.

But this isn’t a philanthropic movement. While Amazon will invest money and provide technical assistance to farmers — and TNC and other nonprofits will provide support on the ground — the tech colossus will receive carbon credits in exchange. Amazon executives and NGO representatives say this project is a win-win for forests, farmers, investors, and even for international carbon credit markets.

“The logic was to generate an alternative source of income so the small farmers wouldn’t have to expand their cattle production through deforestation. This logic, however, had always been philanthropic so far,” said TNC conservation director Rodrigo Spuri Tafner de Moraes in a phone interview.

Before the partnership with Amazon, TNC said it developed a pilot project in Pará over the last eight years named Cacau Floresta (“forest cocoa” in English) to help small farmers start producing sustainable crops of high market value, such as cocoa; Brazil is one of the world’s top cocoa-producing countries, but is still a net importer of the commodity.

According to TNC, this pilot project incentivized small farmers and ranchers to recover degraded or unproductive areas by planting cocoa trees in addition to other native species. This approach created low-carbon, small-scale agricultural production through agroforestry systems that recovered the forest while opening up a new income source for farmers, the nonprofit added.

Now, through the partnership with Amazon, the investing model aims to generate carbon credits by scaling the project over time, with the possibility of bringing in other investors, the partners say. The goal for the first three years, they say, is to support 3,000 small farmers and restore around 20,000 hectares (nearly 50,000 acres), an area approximately the size of the city of Seattle. Amazon calculates that this would remove up to 10 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through 2050.

“We believe that there are more than 40,000 farmers who could benefit from a program like this in the region, and that would take a significant scale of investment,” James Mulligan, senior scientist at Amazon, told Mongabay in a phone interview. “We will set up the basic structure of the project and set up the program to scale. In order to scale, it needs additional investments which could come from different sources.”

To succeed, the project includes comprehensive steps, developers say, ranging from a platform to select eligible farmers, to training for the requisite skills, given that deforestation here is driven largely by cattle ranchers who don’t know how to produce cocoa. Smallholders will also have access to high-quality seeds, access to credit lines, logistics to support sales, and entryways to markets, they add.

News: Regina King on Vanity Fair US | Amanda Gorman @ Estee Lauder | Marie Claire US

Regina King Covers Vanity Fair US October 2021

Actor, director, producer Regina King covers the October 2021 issue of Vanity Fair Magazine wearing a Balenciaga gown and earrings by Taffin. Nicole Chapteau styles King in the cover and accompanying fashion story lensed by Jackie Nickerson.

Jesmyn Ward interviews Regina King about her current role as Trudy Smith in ‘The Harder They Fall’. AOC will excerpt the interview and fashion story but you can read it now.

For those of us who love Regina King to death, watching her incorrigible chic cowgirl ‘Treacherous’ Trudy Smith character ride up to the front of a train, stopping the conductor to shoot him dead before he can utter a racist slur, is a bit unsettling. Still, we’re not dreaming. Reginia King is riding in great company. Idris Elba, Jonathan Majors, LaKeith Stanfield, and Zazie Beetz really are starring with King as a band of outlaws.

Marie Claire US Ceases Print Publication

The US print edition of Marie Claire is ending its 27-year-run. The magazine was sold by Hearst to British publisher Future Media in May, with news breaking September 10 that Marie Claire’s Summer 2021 issue would be its last in America.

Harper’s Bazaar EIC Samira Nasr made the announcement, adding that Marie Claire subscribers will instead receive a print copy of Harper’s Bazaar US, a Hearst publication. Nasr added that Marie Claire would publish select special editions sold on newsstands.

In breaking the story, the New York Post reminded readers that the pandemic has only accelerated trends already playing out in a fractured media landscape.

Hearst quietly reduced Marie Claire’s frequency from 11 to 7 times a year in 2020. In May 2020 Hearst reported that Marie Claire’s total circulation hovered around 900,000 with newsstand sales hitting just around 11,000 copies sold. Just three years earlier, Marie Claire’s circulation totaled 1.1 million, according to the Alliance for Audited Media., a nonprofit media audit firm.

Marie Claire’s most recent circulation figures were not available, but whatever they are, they are likely to give the smaller Harper’s Bazaar a much-needed bump. Bazaar’s total circulation totals roughly 740,000 with less than 25,000 copies sold at the newsstand, the glossy said.

Amanda Gorman Aligns Herself with Estee Lauder

Biden Inauguration Poet Amanda Gorman will become the first Estée Lauder “Global Changemaker”. In this new role — presumably created for Gorman, she will be an ambassador or “face’, even a spokeswoman. These are all roles currently in the Estée Lauder family performed by women like Liz Hurley and Carolyn Murphy.

Gorman’s new role steps up that role while bringing Gorman into the corporate offices under the philanthropy umbrella.

The Harvard graduate and first person named National Youth Poet Laureate will also work with the beauty industry giant to create Writing Change, a set of grants worth $3 million to promote literacy among girls and women — and with it access to equity and social change.

This step for Gorman in her carefully-planned entry into major halls of power and influence in the business world is what she calls “the space I now occupy”.

According to Jane Hertzmark Hudis, the executive group president of the Estée Lauder Companies, she called Ms. Gorman’s agent as soon as the poet walked offstage, and they first spoke within an hour of her appearance, writes Vanessa Friedman for NYT.

“I felt as committed and passionate about creating a partnership as I’ve been about anything,” Ms. Hudis said — and she has been with the group for 35 years. “We essentially came to them with a blank page, because we knew we could do something that hadn’t been done before.”

Rawdah Mohammed in Vogue X Cartier for Vogue Arabia by Nima Benati AOC Fashion

In her role as Norwegian fashion editor for the new Vogue Scandinavia, model Rawdah Mohamed is appearing frequently as a model for the magazine and online at Vogue Scandinavia. In May AOC featured Mohamed as an ambassador for Cartier, representing the brand in Denmark.

Today we share new images of Rawdah Mohamed in a Vogue X Cartier collab for Vogue Arabia. Gaia Fraschini styles the multifaceted model in images by Nima Benati [IG] for the September 2021 issue.

Studying these women is a fascinating example of “new thinking” around creatives and talents, media and luxury brands. Old-fashioned lines of "‘ethical’ demarcation are definitely blurring.

Benati’s IG is filled with images of her toasting Moet & Chandon, with whom she has worked since 2017, at the Venice Film Festival. “I adore you!” she exclaims about her LVMH client, raising her glass from her boat in the canals of Venezia.

On the sustainability front, Cartier’s chief executive Cyrille Vigneron recently interviewed with BOF on the subject of sustainability and also lab-grown diamonds.

For decades consumers assumed brands and retailers did the right thing, the CEO explained and “that was enough”. In the digital age, brands and retailers cannot make unsubstantiated claims about their sustainability initiatives. “When it comes to the environment, you must express your intentions and show that you “walk the talk,” Vigneron said.

We believe that as brands, models, image-makers, editors and magazines become one contiguous cast of interlinking characters, each will inherit the other’s DNA. AOC has never been judgmental about these business decisions, but we will explore them always as part of our own editorial policy.

In July, WWD featured an article on parent company Richemont and its brands — including Cartier — stipulating that the company has fully embraced a “green growth” agenda. Preparing to release its July 2021 report “Movement for Better Luxury”, Richemont stated that for the first time in the 15 years, it has asked EY to audit its processes, progress and adherence to the U.N.’s Sustainable Development, and other goals.

On this topic, AOC likes to think we may have influenced this decision, being positively critical of Cartier’s sustainability reporting. In May 2020, we wrote:

Model Vivien Solari is styled by Sam Ranger in simple elegance accented by ‘Panthere de Cartier’ luxury jewelry. Photographer Charlotte Hadden is in the studio for Exit Magazine’s Spring-Summer 2020 issue.

Looking for more information on Cartier’s sustainability practices, it strikes me as being more vague than those of Tiffany and Chopard. Here is Tiffany & Co. 2017 Sustainability Report. — all 100 pages. And this fall 2019 link takes us to a detailed overview of all Tiffany & Co. sustainability practices and global initiatives.

Working off the Cartier resources website, this simple list of very general Sustainable Development goals appears, when I request the output of Cartier’s sustainability strategy in report form. One must never draw any conclusions between a 100 page sustainability report from Tiffany and a 1 page report from Cartier. This link from the US Cartier website highlights the brand’s philanthropy efforts, particularly with women.

The content is heavy on culture generally but I don’t see any public discussion of Cartier’s sustainability efforts. If I have missed the sustainability discussion — including the rights of workers — on this page, I sincerely apologize. There’s no time to click every link in the website.

We agree 500% that Cartier via Richemont is doing a fantastically better job at embracing publicly and subjecting itself to credentialed scrutiny on the topic of sustainability in 2021.

AOC has done our job well, too. ~ Anne
