In America Being Young Is More Important Than Ever Says Allure

Ninety-three percent of women (presumably American and no demographics given) polled by Allure say the pressure to look young today is greater than it’s ever been. We’re filtering these results into larger surveys that we know to be demographically balanced and find them generally accurate for American women.

In a distressing survey result, men said that women are at their most beautiful age at 28. In 1991, Allure ran a similar study where men voted 31 to be the hottest age. The cultural pressure on American women to look young means that we are ‘washed up’ looks wise at 28, and it’s a long way down to death.

This reality is not the case in other cultures like France, Brazil and Italy where older women are considered to be ‘hot’ and the answers among women to ‘most beautiful’ questions diverge dramatically between American women and women in other countries.

It’s also true that America’s changing waistlines since 1991 could impact the Allure aging answer. While only 3% of women identified themselves as cougars, 26% of men said that cougars are hot. Read more survey results.

Allure Magazine reports that 73% of women they polled agree that a curvier body type is more appealing now than at any time in the last 10 years. Still, 85% of women want narrower hips. What percent will pad them when necessary for public viewing?

Dove (Campaign for Ideal Beauty) asked the question ‘what is the age of ideal beauty’? By country responses to the answer ‘twenties’ were:

USA 48%; GBR 41%; FRA 11%; ITA 16%; BRA 18%.

Conversely, by country responses to the answer ‘forties” were:

USA 12%; GBR 22%; FRA 39%; ITA 38%; BRA31%.
