Mattel Launches Farrah Fawcett Barbie for Cancer Research
/
It’s good to know that every girl needs a slimdown, when she’s becoming Barbie. Mattel has launched a Farrah Barbie honoring the Charlie Angel’s star, with all proceeds doing to the Farrah Fawcett Fooundation, launched in late June 2010, on the first anniversary of Fawcett’s death from her long battle with anal cancer.
The Farrah Fawcett Foundation is focused on funding alternative cancer research. Alana Stewart, close friends with Fawcett for 30 years, is president of the foundation. They should be thanked for their generosity.
I admit to just not getting it, when the focus is Barbie dolls and growing numbers of young girls terrified of getting curves. Read our recent post on anorexia increasing among girls.
Barbie Doll Mocks Christina Hendricks, Real Woman Curves
Christina Hendricks got a major Barbie slimdown, but even Farrah Fawcett — that butt-kicking Angel needs a slimdown, too? Give me the good ‘ol days.
Help may be on the way. Women artists have their own way of relating to Barbie and her place in popular culture.
Last week I chatted with Itaian artist Beatrice Morabito whose disruptive, subversive, erotic Barbies have been featured twice on AOC. Understanding that Morabito calls her Chanel Barbie ‘good dollies’ makes it easy to understand why we get along well.

Mariel Clayton is another artist enchanted with Barbie but differently than Karl Lagerfeld who may give the good ‘ol girl another slimdown in the future. When the subject is Barbie, how low can you go?

I’m inspired to be bad now, ready to do a big picture examination of Barbie art. It will be fun. Thanks again to the Mattel folks for supporting cancer research. Now if we could get them to find just a pinch of healthy muscle tone Barbie-worthy, I will love them forever. Anne
