8 of Fashion's Biggest Names Honor Donna Karan Relaunch Lensed by Annie Leibovitz

In 1992 American designer Donna Karan launched her campaign “In Women We Trust” shot by Peter Lindbergh. That fashion maverick statement about female leadership and competence was celebrated again today — not with America’s first woman president which we’ve all hoped for — but with photographer legend Annie Leibovitz gathering eight models so famous that they can go by their first names without confusion.

Featured in the Donna Karan revival campaign are Amber Valletta, Carolyn Murphy, Cindy Crawford, Imaan Hammam, Karlie Kloss, Linda Evangelista, Liya Kebede and Shalom Harlow.

Donna Karan has a lifetime of advocating for women’s empowerment. While the label means little to young women, a Donna Karan re-emergence is celebrated by their mothers.

The Donna Karan legacy is changing, as young women are introduced to the brand in vintage stores and through talents like Kendall Jenner and Grace Van Patten. Nicole Richie wore a a vintage dress from the label to her sister Sofia’s stylish wedding in the south of France in spring 2023.

Trey Laird worked as creative director of the campaign, tapping into his 11 years of working in-house at Donna Karan International. This stellar composite of superwomen represents G-III Apparel Group’s largest ad campaign to date, since acquiring the brand from LVMH in 2016 for $650 million.

Donna Karan New York was first launched in 1985 and was privately owned by the designer and her late husband, Stephan Weiss, before being sold to LVMH in 2001 for $243 million. The label always stood for strength and sensuality.

Not relying on power shoulders to make its point, Donna Karan wrapped its ‘7 Easy Pieces’ as a system of dressing modeled on a more European mindset but with a sensual twist and plenty of drama.

Considered to be the original capsule collection, the phrase “System of Dressing” will be a key statement about the relaunched, much more affordable Donna Karan New York label.

In a video shared exclusively with PEOPLE, Linda Evangelista praises Donna Karan’s place in American fashion.

"Donna believed more in women than anybody," Evangelista, 58, says. "You can be whoever you want to be in her clothes."

Other brands owned by G-III include Calvin Klein, DKNY, GUESS, Karl Lagerfeld, Levi’s, Tommy Hilfiger and more.
