Gigi Hadid Covers i-D Magazine No.363 by Daniel Jackson | Gigi's Blue Pasta
/A pensive Gigi Hadid covers the Summer 2021 issue of i-D magazine No. 363. The supermodel appears as a low-key, blank canvas styled by Alastair McKimm in modern, relaxed designs from The Row. Daniel Jackson [IG] creates the studio portraits with a brief interview by Osman Ahmed.
Two concepts resonate with AOC from Gigi’s interview. The first concerns her own mixed-race status — and Bella’s, although that is not mentioned. And her baby daughter Khai is also mixed-race in a world that is on the one hand increasingly embracing of the identity but also cruel about it at the same time. And that includes progressives — Anne’s words, not Gigi’s.
We’ve followed this issue with the Hadid sisters since day one, and it’s obvious that Gigi has been deeply reflective on this topic. She says:
In certain situations, I feel – or I’m made to feel – that I’m too white to stand up for part of my Arab heritage. You go through life trying to figure out where you fit in racially. Is what I am, or what I have, enough to do what I feel is right? But then, also, is that taking advantage of the privilege of having the whiteness within me, right? Am I allowed to speak for this side of me, or is that speaking on something that I don’t experience enough to know? Do you know what I’m saying?
It’s clear that Hadid has a future vision for herself and it will unfold in the coming weeks. Her [IG ]suggests change is coming. Our second focus is on blue pasta.
My pasta that’s in the pasta drawers (that are for show) are actually made with a glue type thing that keeps them preserved. The girl that I collaborated with to make these, her Instagram is @saltyseattle. She actually makes kits that you can buy and make your own pasta, and she colours all the pasta naturally. So, I think the blue is spirulina. Each colour is made with a natural colouring – like, the red is beet, the yellow is turmeric. And she has a book where she teaches you how to make each colour. I’ve followed her for years and it was always a dream to have some of her work preserved. I look at them every day and I love them. They spark joy.
Joy is a prominent word in Gigi Hadid’s vocab today, and she will spend this year basking in it — not matter what is sent her way. Blue pasta is only the beginning. Read on at i-D.
