Hailey Bieber + Oge Egbuonu + Levi's Get Out the VOTE Video
/With the November 3, 2020 presidential election a bit more than two months away, Levi’s brings together a get out the vote campaign collaboration between Hailey Bieber and filmmaker Oge Egbuonu, sharing the stage with a group of activists, scholars, organizers and friends.
Oge Egbuonu most recently directed the newly released film ‘Invisible Portraits’, described as a “love letter to black women.”
The message: VOTE! The voices are urgent: “ “On November 3, 86 out of 99 state legislative chambers are holding elections. There are 70 million young eligible voters, the largest and the most diverse generation in our country’s history,” the video begins. The project came together with Bieber’s motivation to raise important conversations around voter education. A group of 17 people including Jaden Smith, Miguel, Brandon Flynn, student activist Kahlila Williams, Black Lives Matter Youth Vanguard founder Thandiwe Abdullah, Crazy Rich Asians director John M. Chu, researcher and educator Dr. Joy DeGruy, professor and civil leader Dr. Melina Abdullah, and poet Jazmine Williams gather to deliver a powerful message on changing the future of America — only possible.through voting.
Bieber explains how the new campaign happened: “I had a vision to put together a beautiful and powerful call to action to educate and inform the next generation of voters, and to me, Levi’s felt like the perfect team to partner with on this. Oge is an incredible force and she really helped me bring my idea to life. This election is the most important in my lifetime and I’m at the age now where I truly understand the impact my generation and the next has. My hope with this call to action is that it would encourage, educate and inspire this next generation to vote in November and to understand why it’s important.”
The PSA video pulls no punches with its targeted message to America’s younger voters. "This is the same year that brought a pandemic, which disproportionately killed Black and Brown Americans and Indigenous people," the 17 participants explain. "The same 2020 that took the breath of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Nina Pop, and Dominique Fells. So on November 3rd 2020, know that voter suppression will be present. . .you will be discouraged. . .Tuesday will be imperfect. Vote anyway."
As part of the initiative, Levi Strauss & Co. and the Levi Strauss Foundation are donating a collective $2.6 million to various voting rights organizations including the ACLU, Black Futures Lab, Rock the Vote and more.
