H&M Conscious Exclusive Delivers First Fall Collection With Liu Wen | Fall/Winter 2018 Lookbook

Supermodel Liu Wen shares the first Fall-Winter collection from H&M’s Conscious Exclusive collection. Launching on September 27 online, the romantic silhouettes are inspired by ancient tapestry and include materials made from recycled cashmere and velvet, coupled with 100% organic silk.

Cecilia Brännsten, H&M group environmental sustainability manager, explains that as consumers hug words like “transparency” and “traceability’, retailers and manufacturers are pressed to innovate sustainable materials and methods.

This season the Swedish high-street giant has introduced recycled cashmere created from leftover yarn that has been respun, and velvet made of recycled polyester partly sourced from used uniforms. “We have been developing this velvet for years to get a quality we're happy with,” Brännsten explains of the brand's closed loop production efforts on these heavier materials that have finally come to fruition in its first autumn/winter Conscious Exclusive line.

Lady Gaga covers the October 2018 issue of Vogue US, styled in sensual glam looks by Tonne Goodman.  Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin are behind the lens, with hair by Frederic Aspiras and makeup by Sarah Tanno.

On October 5, Warnes Bros. Pictures will release version #4 of the tragi-musical love story 'A Star Is Born', starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. Vogue's Jonathan van Meter writes

The first version came out in 1937, starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, followed by Judy Garland and James Mason in 1954 and Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in 1976. Gaga thinks of it less as a remake than as a “traveling legacy.” Directed by Cooper, in his debut, the film is remarkably assured, deeply engaging, and works on several levels: as a romance, a drama, a musical, and something else entirely, almost as if you’re watching something live, or documentary footage of a good old-fashioned rock-’n’-roll concert movie. 

“I wanted to tell a love story,” says Cooper, “and to me there’s no better way than through music. With music, it’s impossible to hide. Every fiber of your body becomes alive when you sing.” As Sean Penn said, after seeing the film more than once, “It’s the best, most important commercial film I’ve seen in so many years,” and he described the stars as “miracles.” Cooper and Gaga, and the film itself, are likely to be nominated for all manner of awards."

Sitting in Gaga's house in Malibu, Van Meter goes on and on and on about Cooper. LOL Wait up! He just noted that Gaga held her own with Cooper.  Miracle of miracles, apparently. The soundtrack will be released the same day as the movie, and because this is a Lady Gaga production, "she has had a big hand in it". Hmmm, wouldn't yah think? I mean the girl can do something right. She CAN sing and she knows how to make songs that appeal to zillions of people who adore her. But wait up, Cooper zooms back into view: "There were many writers and producers who worked on different songs, but the brain trust was Gaga and Cooper, working closely with the blues-oriented producer and songwriter Ben Rice and Lukas Nelson, who’s Willie’s son." Whew! At least Gaga came before Cooper in the Lady Gaga Production brain trust. 

Now for Gaga: she is a multi-paragraph, basket case: we know little about her new boyfriend Christian Carino -- first things first. Same paragraph we hear abut her being sexually assaulted as a teenager. I think we know that for about 20 years. Come on Jonathan. Give us some new and exciting insights about Lady Gaga. Throw her a meaty bone and let her talk. Enough of you; we want to hear from her. 

Okay, she makes an appearance in #MeToo, but scratch that. Does she have an opinion? Nope. We're on to her PSTD and mental health issues. Pain. The woman's got pain. Like we know all that, too, Jonathan. Women know about all these issues, one part of the life of an enormously talented woman. She is not defined exclusively by her pain. How about talent? How about Trump? How about resistance? Are their any accomplishments? Any wisdom learned along the way?

Nope. We're onto the fibromyalgia and extreme nerve pain caused by fibromyalgia. Amazingly, the walking basket case known as Lady Gaga somehow made it through the filming of this new movie with the real star Bradley Cooper.  How she made it to Venice for the film festival two weeks ago is a major miracle. I saw her strutting around in the new Celine collection from her buddy Hedi Slimane. Now I'm thinking that Bradley Cooler was carring her on his back, and they just cropped him out of the shots to save her reputation. 

Okay, to be reasonable here (which is difficult in reading this interview) Lady Gaga gets a nice almost last paragraph, while letting out a "mordant chuckle" before the Mister Softee truck sound enters HIS consciousness.

“He said that he had a terrible problem, that he basically couldn’t control himself when alone with a woman.”

Reading these words by ousted CBS CEO Les Moonves -- written in an apologetic note to a UCLA woman doctor he attacked, after she was requested to handle the VIP client at a 7am meeting -- I find them just staggering.

This man has overseen the careers of how many women at CBS -- to say nothing of Charlie Rose? Moonves was ousted today without a severance package, over Ronan Farrow's new article in which 6 new women including knowledge about the doctor came forward. The women were furious that CBS seemed to not be responding to the first claims against Moonves.

The women were also totally disgusted that Les Moonves was turning truth against the #MeToo movement, arguing that the sex was all consensual. Yet the words written to the woman doctor had to roll around in his brain some days.

This week I learned that Moonves tried to destroy Janet Jacson over the NFL nip slip, while dishing no pain to her partner in the accident Justin Timberlake.

I've been on the hunt for bamboo tubes used in our GlamTribal jewelry and this gorgeous image from Tanzania's Selous Safari Company is causing me to have a eureka moment! I'm probably finding them to be so scarce because larger bamboo tubes are now being used as straws. 

One of the core values and main objectives of Selous Safari Company is its commitment to have minimal impact on the environment. 

Long before it was mainstream practice, SSC stopped using plastic bags, started using solar power, set out to recycle all their "taka taka" (Swahili word for garbage) and ceased using plastic bottles. Selous Safari Company also stopped using plastic straws… without a firm plan for their replacement.

A bit of creative meditation, most likely accompanied by a delicious cocktail or two on their magnificent beach, produced the answer: Bamboo straws! And NOT delivered by Amazon. REAL, AUTHENTIC bamboo straws. 

SSC's beach lodge, Ras Kutanion the Swahili Coast has plenty of bamboo, and the creative minds went into high gear. Tanzania's Elephant Population Hit Extremely Hard, Losing About 70% In Last Decade

The global elephant populations is in a state of crisis in many countries. Tanzania is now a key center of Africa's poaching crisis, after a government census analyzing the nation's elephant population from 2009 to 2014 revealed a catastrophic loss of 60% of its elephants in just five years. 

Revealing elephant declines far greater than expected, the census estimated Tanzania's elephant population in 2014 at 43,330, down from 109,051 in 2009. Fast forward to 2018, and Tanzania's Selous Game Reserve has lost almost 90% of the park's elephants over the past 40 years. Forty years ago, 100,000 elephants roamed Selous, located in southern Tanzania, and today the number is estimated to be 15,200. 

"Tanzania has been extremely hard hit by the latest elephant poaching crisis that has hit the African continent for 10 years," Bas Huijbregts, WWF's African species manager, told CNN.

In 1974, Jocelyn Bell Burnell experienced sexism so ingrained in everyday university life that it seemed business as usual. Burnell's male PhD supervisor at the University of Cambridge Anthony Hewish, won a Nobel prize for Burnell's 1967 discovery of pulsars during a routine data collection she monitored at Cambridge. You might think that Hewish would have shared the award with Burnell, knowing the truth of her discovery. 

This was not the way academia worked, Burnell told Science News in an interview on Thursday, the day the now acclaimed astrophysicist won an acclaimed science prize -- the Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics and its $3 million award. 

The award honors Bell Burnell for her hiscovery of pulsars -- neutron stars that emit electromagnetic radiation from their poles. The press release also recognized Burnell's “inspiring scientific leadership over the last five decades”.

Burberry Formally Gives Up Fur, Moves To Recycled Packaging & Will Stop Burning Excess Inventory

Burberry made two announcements on Thursday, following up on its May 2018 promise to review its use of real fur in its collections. Equally important, Burberry's chief executive Marco Gobbetti responded to criticism from the general public over its practice of destroying its unsold luxury products. In a first move for the luxury brands market, Burberry will become the first company to reuse, repair, donate or recycle all of its unsaleable products. 

Gobbetti said: “Modern luxury means being socially and environmentally responsible. This belief is core to us at Burberry and key to our long-term success. We are committed to applying the same creativity to all parts of Burberry as we do to our products.”

The amount of stock Burberry destroys had risen sharply in recent years, from £5.5 million in fiscal year 2013 to £28.6 million in the last fiscal year. Gobbetti also announced that the creation of a new logo triggered a need for all new packaging, shopping bags, marketing materials, and they would now use recycled materials. 

As for the company's use of fur, it's over at Burberry. Riccardo Tisci's debut collection presented at London Fashion Week on September 17 will be fur free.

Hunkering down in its support of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick with derision from Trump and threats of a boycott, NIKE released a two-minute commercial narrated by him on Wednesday. NIKE also announced plans to run the ad on the NFL's first broadcast of the regular season.  

The ad, called “Dream Crazy,” features Mr. Kaepernick and other star athletes in the Nike stable, including Serena Williams and LeBron James. It implores viewers to dream big, using the inspiring stories of those stars and of everyday weekend warriors who overcame illness or disability to triumph athletically.  The emphasis on disabled and physically-impaired athletes is given huge exposure in the uplighting, American moxie, 'Just Do It' 30th anniversary commercial. 

Greg Hughes, a spokesman for NBC Sports, confirmed to the New York Times that Nike had purchased airtime on Thursday’s N.F.L. game. The commercial is a shorter, 90-second version of this ad released digitally Wednesday. The league did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Nike is a major partner of the N.F.L.’s, providing the uniforms for all 32 teams and the clothing worn by everybody on an N.F.L. sideline.   Read on

Joy' by Dior is a big deal for the luxury house, becoming its third pillar fragrance for women, following Miss Dior (launched in 1947) and J'Adore Dior (1999). Consider a pillar fragrance the mother goddess brand -- Gaia, if you will -- from which all streams flow. The subbrands are like children: J'Adore Dior gave birth to J'Adore L'Or and J'Adore L'Absolu. 

Everything about Joy by Dior is aimed at millennials. “The company had evolved and grown on these two pillars,” said Claude Martinez, chief executive officer of Parfums Christian Dior. “And, three years ago, we felt it was about time to add another one that appealed to the next generation of consumers. … The new generation in Europe and the U.S. — people in their 20s, I’m talking about — are not that much in favor of fragrances. They are disconnected. A brand like Dior needs to be able to talk to them.”

Arbitrator Stephen Burbank Rules That Colin Kaepernick NFL Collusion Case Will Proceed

New York Magazine reports that on Thursday an arbitrator rejected the NFL's request to dismiss Colin Kaepernick's collusion grievance against the National Football League. As a result, the case will move to a trial-like hearing not open to the public. 

Arbitrator Stephen Burbank ruled that Kaepernick has enough evidence to pursue his claim that NFL owners have acted in collusion against him in not hiring him to play in the league. Kaepernick is seeking damages equal to what he would have earned if he were still playing in the league. Kaepernick could be awarded compensatory damages for the pay he lost due to collusion, in addition to punitive damages, potentially totaling tens of millions of dollars.

The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback began protesting police violence against African Americans by taking a knee during the playing of the national anthem. The protest action created enormous criticism from President Trump, even though taking a knee is a historical form of civil rights protests, and the national anthem was not part of NFL proceedings until the US military became a major NFL sponsor.

French Open Bans Serena Williams From Wearing Life-Saving, Anti-Blood Clot Catsuit

Serena Williams wasn't trying to be some slutty woman of color when she wore her black Nike catsuit before dropping out of the 2018 French Open with an injury. Williams dealt with a life-threatening, post-pregnancy blot clot scare in 2017.  The G.O.A.T. dedicated her ultimate power suit to "all the moms out there who had a tough recovery from pregnancy" on Instagram. 

Serena agreed that the design was a partial nod to 'Black Panther'. "I call it, like, my Wakanda-inspired catsuit." The French Tennis Federation will have no more Wakanda-inspired dress on its professional tennis courts, banning Serena -- or any of her wannabes -- from wearing similar sartorial outfits in the future.

Bernard Giudicelli, the president of the French Tennis Federation, told Tennis magazine her catsuit was specifically a problem. “It will no longer be accepted. One must respect the game and the place,” he said. “I think that sometimes we’ve gone too far.”

Just to be clear, Williams' suit had a potentially live-saving functionality. As a full-body compression garment, it was designed to help with blood clots, a life-threatening health issue Serena's dealt with frequently. Williams was sidelined for a year, with several blod clots in both lungs in 2011. And when she was giving birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia, last year, she had a pulmonary embolism that could have killed her. It was only her own knowledge of these life-threatening problems that demanded medical action when doctors and nurses were oblivious to what was happening.

“I had a lot of problems with my blood clots, and, God, I don’t know how many I have had in the past 12 months. So it is definitely a little functionality to it,” Williams said of the suit. “I have been wearing pants in general a lot when I play, so I can keep the blood circulation going. It’s a fun suit but it’s also functional, so I can be able to play without any problems.”

Giudicelli said the rules won’t be as strict as Wimbledon, which makes everyone wear white, but they will be asking designers to give them an advance look at designs for players and will “impose certain limits.”

On the heels of my comments on the new VS 'Tease Rebel' fragrance campaign, Hailey Baldwin drops into the pages of Vogue Mexico's September 2018 issue. It's a perfect setup to ask: What's sexy now?

Hailey's wearing a Balenciaga hoodie with the WFP logo is part of that conversation, one that AOC has engaged around with readers for a decade: : the rise of  Smart Sensuality Women who are smart, sexy and have great heart. 

When Demna Gvasalia became creative director of Balenciaga, one of his first moves was to unveil a partnership with the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, the World Food Programme. Vice wrote: "Rooted in Balenciaga’s conviction to be a pacemaker for positive change, this partnership uses fashion to engage global consumers with the issue of hunger and to raise awareness of the World Food Programme‘s work in emergencies and with local communities to build resilience."

“It’s about using fashion as a tool of communication,” Gvasalia explained post-show while wearing a co-branded WFP logo-adorned cap with its ‘Saving Lives, Changing Lives’ slogan written on its side. “Now as a designer, if I create a graphic, it has to mean more,” he added.

“We consider this partnership to be an important step in making fashion useful in a different way and supporting good causes with our products whenever possible.”

In no way am I suggesting that Victoria's Secret should strike a partnership with the UN. But they need to strike a partnership around a genuine values set that resonates with a very changing branding landscape. Hailey Baldwin may be flashing a priceless engagement ring in these sensual images but she's also embracing a larger set of humanitarian values under assault worldwide.

Models Gigi Hadid and Halima Aden cover CR Fashion Book Issue 13, an issue dedicated to UNICEF USA, according to editor Carine Roitfeld.  Carine broke away from the fashion pack with her fall issue, dedicated to doing good by raising awareness for the global children's relief organization with two of its newest ambassadors Hadid, the half Palestinian daughter of a Syrian refugee and Aden, a Somali refugee and prominent Muslim, hijab-wearing model. 

“The state of fashion media is absolutely in flux so it was really important for me to use my existing platform for good,” Roitfeld told The Hollywood Reporter. Choosing to spotlight UNICEF USA was a response to the international news. According to the organization, “more children are on the move now than at any point since World War II,” notes Roitfeld, the editor of Vogue Paris for a decade before founding CR Fashion Book in 2012.

Reflecting on the state of magazines generally, Carine Roitfeld says: "It’s difficult for me to talk about the future because things are constantly changing. Over 15 years ago I was asked this question while everyone was going digital and no one knew what was going to happen. Print survived then and it’s still trying to survive now," she says. "Today we are up against social media, which is a blessing and curse. People have much more access in real time — they don’t want to wait until an issue hits stands to read something. I think maybe some magazines will stay but they have to be very beautiful, like a collector’s item. They have to feature people and topics that are unique, that stand out but also resonate globally.”

I slept in this am, being just drained from work. I read yesterday about CNN making a documentary about the extraordinary human Anthony Bourdain, who committed suicide a few months ago. I miss him so much.

And now I wake up this morning to read that Bourdain's girlfriend Asia Argento, one of Harvey Weinstein's chief accusers of rape in 1997 and a leading figure in the #MeToo movement, quietly arranged to pay $380,000 for her own alleged assault against Jimmy Bennett when he was 17 and she 37.

UN Ambassador Gigi Hadid Visits Jamtoli Refugee Camp In Bangladesh, Housing Rohingya Muslims

Gigi Hadid has embarked on her first humanitarian mission as a UNICEF ambassador, visiting the Rohingya Muslim refugees in Bangladesh as part of a United Nations Children’s Fund initiative. The part Palestinian model is documenting her visit with Muslim children in Cox's Bazaar's Jamtoli Refugee Camp on her Instagram account. The Jamtoli Refugee Camp is currently home to approximately 45,000 Rohingya refugees who escaped Myanmar after the 2012 riots that resulted in the displacement of over 90,000 people.

The 23-year-old showed her 40 million followers a football game with some of the children, along with this text:

“As well as psychosocial work to help them get through trauma through activities like art, they also can play sports, learn music, and learn to read & draw (some for the first time in their lives). Separate from educational spaces, the importance of these spaces is huge due to the fact that refugee children can spend a majority of the day working, usually collecting fire wood from miles away so their families can cook, taking care of siblings, helping around the house, etc., and here they can just focus on having fun!”

Hadid also visited the ‘Women/Girl Friendly’ zones in the Jamtoli Camp: a safe place for females, young and old, to come learn basic education as well as personal hygiene, skills such as sewing, and also a place where they can share and connect with other women and girls.

AOC missed the June announcement that Gigi Hadid was joining HM Queen Rania of Jordan, Serena Williams, Priyanka Chopra and Katy Perry as a UNICEF International Ambassador.  We've never been critical of Gigi, including when she speaks in support of Palestinians, but it thrills us extra, when she puts her celebrity status to good works like this visit to Bangladesh. This is true beauty!!
