What Shall I Wear?: The What, Where, When, and How Much of Fashion, New Edition Hardcover – August 30, 2022

For the first time in years, Claire McCardell’s beloved fashion and style book What Shall I Wear is back in print.

To celebrate the occasion, the new edition includes a color insert of photos and a foreword by CFDA member Tory Burch.

Burch, an American fashion icon in her own right, finds inspiration in McCardell’s work: tributing McCardell in her Spring/Summer 2022 collection.

In her press notes for an outdoor fashion show last September 2021, Tory Burch announced the establishment of the Tory Burch Claire McCardell Fashion Fellowship at the Maryland Center for History and Culture, which houses the pioneering sportswear designer’s archives.

Gabrielle Chanel and Christian Dior were busy revolutionising women’s fashion in post-war Europe. Much less well-known, US designer Claire McCardell was responsible for her own quiet radicalism. A graduate of the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (now Parsons), McCardell went to Paris, educating herself on the French experience, which also involved ripping apart haute couture pieces by Madeleine Vionnet to figure out their workings.

Coco Chanel died at age 87 in January 1971; Christian Dior at age 52 of a heart attack in October 1957; Claire McCardell died of cancer at age 52 in March 1958. McCardell’s family closed her label after her death.
