Maggie Maurer As Freyja in Vogue Czech September 2025 | Odinism and White Nationalism
/Maggie Maurer lensed by Hana Knizova [IG] for Vogue Czechoslovakia [IG] September 2025 issue dedicated to Fortune Telling. In their own translated words:
“Destiny can appear like a clearly written book, but the ink on the pages may fade and blur. Will you try to read what’s really there, or write your own chapters instead. The future is in you. Each of you is a flame that cannot be extinguished. Go and create.”

Vogue Czech Honors Freyja
An important muse to photographer Elizaveta Porodina, Maurer embodies the goddess Freyja in her Vogue Czech fashion story. In my original GlamTribale jewelry collection — returning very soon to Anne of Carversville, under its original name — Freja was one of the 12 goddesses who inspired my creativity and desire to honor her. In the age of AI, we can learn much more about Freja.
The Nordic goddess Freyja was on my mind this spring, when I wrote about the ancient history of women in Scotland, connected to a post about the Dior Cruise 2025 collection ‘Highland Fling’ featuring Debra Shaw.
If AOC highlighted five core intellectual planks that define Anne of Carversville, one is this statement from my ‘Highland Fling’ commentary:
The Rise of Nobility in Post Nomadic Societies
The emergence of hierarchical societies in the ancient world was a complex process that involved multiple factors and transformations in social organization. As human groups transitioned from nomadic lifestyles to settled agricultural communities, the need for structured governance and social order grew. Surpluses in agriculture allowed for the accumulation of resources, which led to the differentiation of roles and an increasingly stratified society.
Those who controlled resources, such as land and grain, often gained more power and influence, laying the groundwork for the rise of an elite class. Before the arrival of monotheism and Christianity, in particular, women wielded far greater power and influence than in a post-Christian world.
Odinism or Ancestral Odinism Beliefs and Freyja in a Modern World
The Nordic mythology around Freyja is just one more example of belief systems in our pre-monotheism world. While we’re not ‘going there’ today, what is called Ancestral Odinism is being co-opted by right-wingers seeking an alternative to Christian nationalism.
Odinism, often associated with Norse mythology and the Viking era, is a spiritual belief system centered around the worship of deities like Odin, Thor, and Freyja. Emerging from prehistoric Scandinavia, Odinism was part of the broader religious practices that encompassed the values, myths, and cosmology of the Norse people.
Apart from Odinism, Freyja is central to the old Norse religion and mythology and is also recognized by modern-day Heathenry. Do not assume a positive intersection between Odinism and Heathenry. While Heathenry has historically been — and in some forms continues to be — more male-dominated, the demographics are evolving.
The global gender balance is becoming more representative, especially within more inclusive, anti-racist, and non-folkish communities. It appears that American Heathenry is more white-male rigid, while European Heathenry has a larger female representation and is more inclusive.
Clarification is required to understand the intersection of the terms Norse and Viking. For now, all Vikings were Norse, but not all Norse people were Vikings. Being a Viking was an occupation or a specific action rather than an entire ethnicity or culture.
Modern culture in America and beyond has embraced Odinism as one of the few non-Christian nationalist visions that makes sense to many disenchanted and disempowered white males, who see themselves as the most aggrieved group in America and other countries.
Disgruntled White Men and Freyja
In Odinism, Freyja is revered as a powerful goddess of both love and war, holding a status on par with Odin himself among many believers. Her role is complex and multifaceted, encompassing fertility, magic, and death.
Among these disgruntled, depressed and angry, feminism-blaming white men, Freyja is a most powerful goddess they can and do embrace. In doing so, these modern-day followers of Odinism are acknowledging a greater power of women in the Norse and Viking era.
Right-wing believers do make heroes of these white women, while folding this respect for so-called warrior-women with backbone into a much more consequential set of beliefs supporting their embrace of white superiority in all facets of life.
This is the point at which Freyja’s heritage and Odinism itself is officially co-opted into a fraudalent belief system of white superiority that has no foundation in modern Scandinavia or Odinism. For the record, Anne’s ancestry is 25% Swedish and 25% Danish. The rest is 25% British and 25% German.
Many adherents to Odinism believe that a superior-intellect population of white people evolved from the north. While this particular belief has lost all scientific credibility in 2025, its proponents continue to promote the absolutely-debunked theory.
AOC took up the latest DNA evidence to shut down the white people came from the North and had no early humans connection to Africa in Dazed Magazine’s summer 2025 issue. We also shared major discoveries about large amounts of shared DNA among the ancient Canaanites, men living in what is known as the Levant.
This ongoing true history the Levant region is a second of five planks that govern AOC’s writing. It will also feature prominently in the GlamTribale collection.

History in the Levant got an unexpected facts blast just this weekend — one that sent even me reeling. A simple Internet search for my cousin’s interest in the Bahai faith [properly Baháʼí faith] became a jaw-dropper. Everything I thought was the history of the religion is wrong.
Freyja and Sydney Sweeney
Returning to the goddess Freyja, her history is easily ‘bestowed’ on women like Sydney Sweeney in the recent ‘Genes v Jeans’ meltdown over the American Eagle ad. The backlash against the commercial has now spilled over to Sweeney’s film ‘Americana’, with an opening weekend boxoffice of a mere $500,000, announced August 25. That’s yet another post required at AOC.
In summary, the Vogue Czechoslovakia September 2025 issue dedicated to fortune-telling and this Maggie Maurer fashion story dedicated to Freyja, gave me an opening I was looking for.
AOC has officially opened another very controversial topic on Anne of Carversville. Welcome to it
If Muslim scholars in Morocco hadn’t shut down comments over a decade ago, over my work in Sudan and saving a woman from being stoned to death, taking on white nationalism from a religious perspective would surely do it today.
