The reality of today’s Venice is far different from my deeply-cherished memories of a city loved by so many people — and especially the Americans.
In one significant change, Italy is paying cruise lines compensation for Venice’s large-ship ban. According to one report, the Italian government agreed to pay 57.5 million euros to ban the daily dump of big-ship, day trippers into Venice.
The compensation is split between shipping companies that incurred costs in "rescheduling routes and refunding passengers who canceled trips" in 2021, and reimbursements for the terminal operator and related companies impacted by the ban.
Critics have long argued that the ships pollute the canals and contribute to erosion of the city's foundation.
The big cruise ships now dock at the nearby port of Marghera. Smaller cruise vessels can still dock in the city and pass through the Giudecca Canal.
