Straight-Talkin', Fully Informed Amy McGrath Wins Upset In Kentucky 6th District Democrat Primary

Straight-Talkin', Fully Informed Amy McGrath Wins Upset In Kentucky 6th District Democrat Primary

AOC has been all-in with Kentucky District 6 House candidate Amy McGrath, jumping for joy over her stunning Tuesday night victory over Jim Gray, Lexington's well-liked and Democratic-party backed former mayor.

The New York Times writes that Republicans immediately tried to paint the Marine fighter pilot and mother of three as a far left candidate, while the very national Dems who backed her opponent Gray rallied quickly around her. AOC has no such torn allegiances, as we have been for McGrath all the way.

"I have never heard someone so persistent," her campaign's highly-credentialed ad maker Mark Putnam told the Times.

Amy McGrath has a story about refusing to accept the word "no": No, you cannot compete against the boys in sports. No, you cannot serve in combat or fly fighter jets. And no, you certainly cannot defeat the popular mayor of the largest city in your congressional district as a first-time candidate.

What I personally love deeply about Amy is not only her feminism, but her willingness to stand up to Trump. Of all the candidates running for office -- female or male -- McGrath won my heart with her second campaign video by Putnam.

Her third one about taking her kids to the doctor was pretty good, too.

Adwoa Aboah Named One Of 10 Next Generation Leaders By TIME Magazine

Adwoa Aboah Named One Of 10 Next Generation Leaders By TIME Magazine

Activist and model Adwoa Aboah is one of 10 rising activists, artists and athletes covering TIME Magazine as Next Generation Leaders, just another major achievement for a hard-working young woman with plenty of talent, a strong individualist bent, and a commitment to women and girls worldwide.

Growing up in London, Aboah, whose father is Ghanian, says she thought the fashion industry “had no room” for girls like her. Now she’s redefining what’s in vogue. “I put so many limitations on myself,” Adwoa says. “Now I set absolutely no boundaries.”  Reality is that Aboah was right about the fashion industry, but today she is a leader in change so pervasive, that I can't imagine turning back the clock to fashion models being primarily a white girls club. Of course, I never believed America would elect Donald Trump president either, so what do I know!!!

AOC has narrated Aboah's personal history multiple times. What we love the most about her is her activism and fierce feminism. TIME writes:

ICA Miami Announces 'Judy Chicago: A Reckoning' Major Survey Of Her Feminist Art

"RAINBOW SHABBAT" (1992) IS THE CONCLUDING IMAGE IN "THE HOLOCAUST PROJECT: FROM DARKNESS INTO LIGHT," A TRAVELING EXHIBITION THAT CHICAGO CREATED IN COLLABORATION WITH HER HUSBAND, THE PHOTOGRAPHER DONALD WOODMAN.

The Institute of Contemporary Art Miami will host a survey exhibition featuring the work of pioneering and prominent feminist artist Judy Chicago, in time for Art Basel in Miami Beach.

Opening in early December 2018, 'Judy Chicago: A Reckoning' is organized around six major bodies of Chicago's work, including test plates created for 'The Dinner Party, her masterwork permanently installed at The Brooklyn Museum, writes artnet

“For many years, as gratified as I am for all the attention 'The Dinner Party' garnered, it also blocked out the rest of my prodigious body of art,” Chicago told artnet News in an email. “Slowly, other aspects of my production are beginning to be seen around the world, which I am thrilled about.”

WOC Talents Cardi B, Azelia Banks, Rita Ora + Feud Over Degrading Cultural Dialogue

Good goddess! Just three weeks ago, AOC had rapper Cardi B educating us on the Roosevelts. She named every American president backwards, or something to that effect. We extolled her intelligence, very abundant in her May 2018 GQ interview with Caity Weaver.

And now, all hell broke lose in an verbal-only brawl between Azelia Banks -- representing intelligent, cultivated women rappers like her -- and Cardi B, who reminds her of an "illiterate, untalented rat" and a "caricature of a black woman."

Banks continued in her Friday interview on the popular radio program 'The Breakfast Club' with her main argument: "Two years ago, the conversation surrounding black women’s culture was really reaching an all-time high. There was just this really, really, really intelligent conversation going on nationally and then everything just kind of changed and then it was like Cardi B.”

Cardi B had a few choice words about Banks in response, defending herself, her rapper personal and her musical style, saying:

82 Female Actors & Directors Led By Cate Blanchett & Agnes Varda Stage Feminist Protest In Cannes

Eighty-two women including French filmmaker Agnès Varda and the actresses Salma Hayek and Marion Cotillard — appeared on the red carpet for the premiere of “Girls of the Sun” , directed by Eva Husson.  In a display of temperment fiercely embraced by the Kurdish women freedom fighters honored in Husson's film, the women joined Cate Blanchett in a red carpet protest of inequitable representation of women at the Cannes Film Festival.

The number 82 was chosen precisely because in the 71 festival competitions since 1946, only 82 movies by female directors have contended for awards, compared with a total of 1,645 films by male directors. Only one movie by a female director, 'The Piano' by Jane Campion, has ever won the festival's top price, the Palme d'Or. Ms. Husson is one of three female directors among the 21 Palme d'Or contenders this year for 'Girls of the Sun'.

According to The New York Times, the 82 women walked up the carpeted staircase, then turned to face the crowd.

New York Atty General Eric Schneiderman (NOW RESIGNED) Accused By Four Women Of Staggering Physical & Violent Abuse

New York Atty General Eric Schneiderman Accused By Four Women Of Staggering Physical & Violent Abuse

In a staggering article written by Jane Mayer and Ronan Farrow for The New Yorker, an explosive report released Monday evening, Eric Schneiderman, the Attorney General of New York has been accused of nonconsensual physical violence by four women with whom has has had romantic relationships or encounters.

Two of the four women, Michelle Manning Barish and Tanya Selvaratnam, have talked to The New Yorker on the record, in order to protect other women.

"They allege that he repeatedly hit them, often after drinking, frequently in bed and never with their consent. Manning Barish and Selvaratnam categorize the abuse he inflicted on them as “assault.” They did not report their allegations to the police at the time, but both say that they eventually sought medical attention after having been slapped hard across the ear and face, and also choked. Selvaratnam says that Schneiderman warned her he could have her followed and her phones tapped, and both say that he threatened to kill them if they broke up with him."

A third former romantic partner of Schneiderman’s told Manning Barish and Selvaratnam that he also repeatedly subjected her to nonconsensual physical violence, but she told them that she is too frightened of him to come forward. (The New Yorker has independently vetted the accounts that they gave of her allegations.) A fourth woman, an attorney who has held prominent positions in the New York legal community, says that Schneiderman made an advance toward her; when she rebuffed him, he slapped her across the face with such force that it left a mark that lingered the next day. She recalls screaming in surprise and pain, and beginning to cry, and says that she felt frightened. She has asked to remain unidentified, but shared a photograph of the injury with 'The New Yorker'.

In a statement, Schneiderman said, “In the privacy of intimate relationships, I have engaged in role-playing and other consensual sexual activity. I have not assaulted anyone. I have never engaged in nonconsensual sex, which is a line I would not cross.”

Schneiderman's activism on behalf of feminist causes is legendary, and he has assumed an aggressive position in the investigation of Harvey Weinstein's activities in New York State.

Guided by the belief that "If a woman cannot control her body, she is not truly equal." Schneiderman has taken a particularly strong stand on behalf of women's reproductive rights. But, as Manning Barish sees it, “you cannot be a champion of women when you are hitting them and choking them in bed, and saying to them, ‘You’re a fucking whore.’ ” She says of Schneiderman’s involvement in the Weinstein investigation, “How can you put a perpetrator in charge of the country’s most important sexual-assault case?” Selvaratnam describes Schneiderman as “a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” figure, and says that seeing him lauded as a supporter of women has made her “feel sick,” adding, “This is a man who has staked his entire career, his personal narrative, on being a champion for women publicly. But he abuses them privately. He needs to be called out.”

Rihanna Covers Vogue US June 2018 With Choice Words: I'm Not Built Like A Victoria's Secret Girl

Rihanna is making final preparations to join Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, Donatella Versace and Amal Clooney at next week's 2018 Met Gala themed 'Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.' The event and accompanying exhibition is "designed to create a dialogue between fashion and the masterworks of religious art in the museum's holdings, writes Vogue.

Celebrating the event, Rihanna covers the June 2018 issue of Vogue US, lensed by Mert & Marcus and styled by fashion editor Tonne Goodman in glittering looks from Chanel, Michael Kors Collection, Paco Rabanne and more.

Vogue fashion news director Chioma Nnadi interviews the superstar in 'Rihanna on Body Image, Turning 30, and Staying Real -- No Matter What.'

As Victoria's Secret struggles to maintain its position  -- not only the world's largest lingerie brand -- but one with a positive stock price, Rihanna weighs in on her new lingerie collection. “I’m not built like a Victoria’s Secret girl, and I still feel very beautiful and confident in my lingerie.” This observation is important for VS because to date, the brand has a very loyal and cash-register ringing following among women of color.  During my days with the brand, women of color were disproportionately VS customers, a much higher percent of sales than their population demographic in America.

Moral Crusader Roy Moore Sues Four Alabama Sexual Harassment & Teen Assault Accusers For Defamation

Former Alabama  Senate candidate Roy Moore, a man with notoriety on multiple fronts including wanting to govern America as a theocracy, filed a lawsuit on Monday in the Circuit Court of Etowah County, Ala. where he lives with his wife Kayla, writes The New York Times.

Defendants in the suit are Leigh Corfman, Debbie Gibson, Tina Johnson and Beverly Nelson, charged with defaming and conspiring against Moore and his wife Kayla, and of committing libel and slander “by making statements which were false, malicious, and made with intentional or reckless disregard of the truth and with the intent that those statements be published to others, including through state and national media.”

“Those statements caused harm to the reputation and character of Judge Moore and also to his wife Kayla, lowered their standing in the community and discouraged members of the community from associating with them,” the lawsuit said.

Confusion Abounds In Joy Reid's Alleged Homophobic Comments & FBI Investigation Into Her Blog Hack

Confusion Abounds In Joy Reid's Alleged Homophobic Comments & FBI Investigation Into Her Blog Hack

MSNBC host Joy Reid is again embroiled in controversy with Twitter user @Jamie_Maz about several homophobic posts a decade or more old from her now defunct blog, the Reid Report. When @Jamie_Maz first called Reid out in December 2017, she apologized for certain posts that were mild on the hot sauce menu, but clearly embarrassing given Reid's current success as a first-rate, informed and articulate progressive TV personality.

This example of an alleged Joy Reid comment, tweeted by @Jamie_Maz gets to a fundamental argument between in the 2016 Democratic primary. While he is vague about when the statement was written, this opinion attributed to Reid remains an argument today, even though Democrats are chilled out and fully committed to gay rights, gay marriage, gays in the military and all other gay rights. Today the argument continues around purity test topics like abortion and gun control.

Bill Cosby Found Guilty On Three Counts of Sexual Assault, Climaxing Years Of Victim Stories

A Norristown, Pa jury found Bill Cosby, one of the world's best-known entertainers, guilty of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand at his nearby home 14 years ago. The jury reached its verdict on its second day of deliberations at the Montgomery County Courthouse, convicting Cosby of three counts of aggravated indecent assault against Andrea Constand.

"The three counts — penetration with lack of consent, penetration while unconscious, and penetration after administering an intoxicant — are felonies, each punishable by up to 10 years in state prison, though the sentences could be served concurrently", writes The New York Times.

The guilty verdicts are serious -- penetration with lack of consent, penetration while unconscious, and penetration after administering an intoxicant -- are felonies, each carrying a prison sentence of up to 10 years. The sentences could be served concurrently.

An earlier trial in the summer of 2017 ended with a deadlocked jury that deliberated for six days.

'Fearless Girl' Is Movin On Up To the NY Stock Exchange | Charging Bull Is Still Sulking

'Fearless Girl' is on the move, and as usual, Charging Bull is making himself the center of attention. Like Trump, the mere thought of being upstaged by a little woman is way more than his fragile male ego can handle, and 'Fearless Girl' is running out of patience.

New York mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Thursday that 'Fearless Girl' will soon be moving to a spot facing the New York Stock Exchange. And even though theirs is a love/hate relationship the mayor would like Charging Bull to shut his whiny mouth and do what's best for the city by going with her.

After all, Charging Bull never bothered to get a permit when his owner, the artist Arturo Di Modica, dropped the 7,000-pound bronze bull into lower Manhattan in the dead of night and without permission.

Since 'Fearless Girl' arrived with permits and official papers -- after all, Charging Bull is an illegal -- ‘Fearless’, who played by the rules, should have the upper hand in my mind. Isn’t that what Trumplandia says about illegals?

In an act of totally Trump, over-the-top ridiculousness, both egos -- the bull’s and Modica’s -- demanded that his illegal beast be turned around, so he didn't even have even to look at 'Fearless Girl'. Meanwhile, Modica’s suing the city over his illegal bull’s alleged mistreatment for goddess knows how many New York bucks.

Karlie Kloss As New Estee Lauder Ambassador: Beauty, Fashion & Tech Are Intertwined & Girls Must Code

Supermodel, businesswoman and philanthropist Karlie Kloss is keen on having bucket lists. Kloss scored a major dunk this week, becoming a brand ambassador for Estee Lauder, joining colleagues Joan Smalls and Kendall Jenner as a global spokesmodel for the iconic beauty brand.

"My entire career, having a beauty contract has been at the top of my bucket list," Kloss reveals. "When I was on an airplane commuting between my life as a high school student in St. Louis and my parallel life as a fashion model in NYC, I would journal about my dreams. I have to find that journal that says, 'Bucket List: Estée Lauder beauty contract.' It's surreal, and I'm really grateful and excited."

One of the refreshing qualities about Karlie Kloss is that she doesn't mind being a bit ditzy at times. This quality is particularly refreshing when she spends so much time with young girls and women with her #KodeWithKlossy project. Karlie plays this role in her first film for Estee Lauder.

Nikki Haley Slams The White House & Larry Kudlow: "With All Due Respect, I Don't Get Confused"

UN Ambassador Nikki Haley coolly and calmly shot down the Trump Administration boys club on Tuesday, after colleagues blamed confusion and misstatements about additional Russian sanctions on her. There's a lesson learned here for women as gutsy as Haley -- which is not the majority of American women -- and for good reason.

New York Magazine provides the story backdrop, with Ambassador Haley stating on Sunday's 'Face the Nation' that additional sanctions were forthcoming, aimed at Russian companies that support Syria's chemical-weapons program. The formal announcement was coming shortly, said Haley, probably on Monday.

Eye: Karl Lagerfeld Is "Fed Up" With #MeToo | Interview Magazine Scrambles | Georgina Chapman Is Ready For Marchessa Comeback

Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld has an opinion on absolutely every topic, and now he's told Numero magazine that he is "fed up" with the #MeToo movement. Lagerfeld takes issue with moves in the fashion industry to embrace new regulations in the interest of protecting young models.

Lagerfeld was interviewed by Numero on International Women's Day -- perhaps not the best idea.

[Numero] Anyway, moving on, today is International Women’s Day…

{KL] For me Women’s Day is every day of the year. Men’s fashion does little for me. I buy it of course, and I’m delighted that Hedi [Slimane] is going to Céline but drawing a men’s collection and having to put up with all those stupid models, no thanks. Not to mention the fact with all their accusations of harassment they have become quite toxic. No, no, no, don’t leave me alone with one of those sordid creatures.

Viola Davis Tells Women in the World She Was #MeToo Before It Became A Hash Tag

Two of AOC's favorite women were in the house Thursday night, when MSNBC host and author Joy-Ann Reid sat down with Viola Davis at the David H. Koch Theater in Lincoln Center at the close of the first day of the 2018 Women in the World Summit. The Hollywood Reporter recaps the exchange

Davis spoke positively about changes coming to Hollywood, saying: “Yes, I do see a moment becoming a movement. I do see a conversation happening. .. . I am a producer, and in the producing realm, people are always looking for female-driven narratives."

“They’re very conscious about hiring female directors. Women are much more aggressive out there in terms of getting what they want. Now we are bold. ... We’re raising a defense fund for women so if they want to prosecute their predator, it’s there for them.”

Continuing in her positive conversational vein, Davis said:  “I see women wanting to be the change that they want to be. Now me, I’ve always been aware because I was involved in the movement before it was a hashtag." Davis was referencing her work with the rape treatment center at UCLA, headed by Gail Abarbanel.

Brains Over Brawn: MSNBC Ratings Up 30% As Fox News Declines 13% 2018 Q1

Brains Over Brawn: MSNBC Ratings Up 30% As Fox News Declines 13% 2018 Q1

Democratic strategists are seeing another reason for optimism about the midterms: soaring ratings for liberal-leaning MSNBC are up 30 percent over last year, while Fox News and CNN both lost viewers from the first quarter of 2017 to the first quarter of 2018 — dropping 16 percent and 13 percent, respectively.

I say the ratings surge 1) yes, represents the growing resurgence of the Democratic party but

2) MSNBC has also brought multiple Republican or now Independent never-Trumpers to its voice. Many of the most left-leaning progressives believe that MSNBC has sold its soul and are not happy about these changes.

I say the results confirm the same research posted last night about the new Democratic party: more female than ever; more educated, strategic and thoughtful; younger by far than the Republican party; more interested in solutions as opposed to daily rants Trump style; and --yes -- totally committed to a diverse, multicultural, safe America, environmental action and protection, gender and LGBTQ equality, economic justice and -- I repeat -- progressive business solutions to the problems of 21st century America. Apologies for obvious omissions.

Government alone cannot get us out of this mess.

So FOX News makes us crazy with their outrageous assault on everyone but Trump. But their ratings are down 13% while MSNBC is up 30%. Rhodes scholar Rachel Maddow has the #2 show on cable news and sometimes she does beat Hannity, who did not get a college degree. Rachel is on the move, Hannity is not.

Sen. Tammy Duckworth Gives Birth To Daughter Maile Pearl Bowlsbey

Democrat Senator Tammy Duckworth (Ill.) gave birth to a daughter named Maile Pearl Bowlsbey on Monday. The event made Duckworth the first US senator to give birth while in office.

Duckworth said she and her husband, Bryan Bowlsbey, and their other daughter, Abigail, “couldn’t be happier to welcome little Maile Pearl as the newest addition to our family.”

“We’re also so grateful for the love and support of our friends and family, as well as our wonderful medical teams for everything they’ve done to help us in our decades-long journey to complete our family,” she said in a statement.

Sen. Duckworth, 50, said former Senator Daniel K. Akaka, a Democrat from Hawaii, “was able to bless her name for us before his death last week. “His help in naming both of our daughters means he will always be with us,” she added.

Conservative Writer Kevin Williamson's Call For Lynching Women Who Have Abortions Ends Gig At The Atlantic

Conservative Writer Kevin Williamson's Call For Lynching Women Who Have Abortions Ends Gig At The Atlantic

Large numbers of liberals -- progressives with an open mind -- really do want to hear and read intelligent dissent from the opposition. But when in-the-know folks learned that conservative writer Kevin Williamson had been hired by The Atlantic, there were gasps. I -- for one -- am not keen to read anti-abortion views calling for the mass lynching of women who have abortions, a public stance Williamson has taken more than once.

Writing for The Daily BeastErin Gloria Ryan points out that a bit of due diligence by The Atlantic could have saved both Williamson and readers a whole lot of drama. Conservative pundits went crazy, arguing that contrary opinions were being silenced in liberal media. I left a comment on The Washington Post in their article Kevin Williamson loses Atlantic job after controversy over abortion rhetoric

As a woman forced into police protection for a year by a man who heard me say one word -- "yes" -- on a TV panel, when asked if I supported Roe, I'm not objective on this topic. Atlantic readers -- and I am one -- are not narrow-minded liberals for not wanting to hear that we should be hanged for having an abortion, when I already was judged deserving to die by a real man big-shot who took Williamson's words literally. This is Trump authoritarianism in high-gear. It's right-wing authoritarianism in high gear. 3 women die every day in America by intimate partners and husbands who talk big like Williamson. The reverse is not true. I freely admit that you scare the f##k out of me, okay? In defense of strong women, I will add that when the masked testosterone-infused chicken (the mask was pathetic) flew across my windshield as I backed out of a parking lot on a dark night, I put my car in gear and tried to run him over. 12 months of daily stalking rendered me a total basket case. Sobbing into the phone, I called the lieutenant at home -- he was so concerned about me that he gave me his home # -- saying "I don't know; I may have killed him." If this is what saying "yes" to a question about supporting a SC decision gets women in this country, I'd think Kevin Williamson should be neutered. How's that.

Environmentalist & Social Activist, Majory Stoneman Douglas Leaves Rich Blueprint For Parkland Activists

Meet Marjory Stoneman Douglas, who was invited to witness the signing of the Brady Bill, after receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1993. These inspiring students, rising out of the ashes and anguish of a devastating act of murder and violence in their Parkland, Fla school have a legacy to honor -- and they know it. We're not accustomed to schools named after women, but Marjory was an exemplary progressive who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom when she was 103, the same day the Brady Bill was signed.

Douglas was a woman way ahead of her time, blessed with a father who clearly believed in her. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1912 as an English major and then went to work as a reporter for her father's newspaper, now known as The Miami Herald, where she became an editor.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas became the first Floridian woman to enlist in the Navy and then joined the Red Cross in 1918. Trained as a nurse, Mrs. Douglas soon set off to Europe to work as a nurse with war relief efforts. Read on

Two-Thirds Of Americans Believe Women's Stories Of Trump Affairs

Sixty-three percent of people surveyed in a new CNN poll believe the women alleging affairs over Trump's quiet denials that they happened at all. In an interest Twist, Trump's overall approval rating rose significantly, even as people said they believe his women accusers and also that Trump's Cabinet and team of top advisers are "generally less qualified and less in touch than previous presidential appointees."
