The photos are included in a new exhibition by Tim Walkerhis third solo exhibition — at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, a fantastical event that will run from Saturday September 7, 2019 until March 2020. Designed by art director Shona Heath, one of Walker’s closest friends, the exhibition will include photographs, films, photographic sets and special installations, as well as a series of newly commissioned works inspired the V&A archive. This Karen Elson editorial ‘Deliver Us’ is one of those new works.

“The beautiful and eclectic objects housed in the V&A have influenced Tim since the start of his career,” Susanna Brown, curator of the Tim Walker exhibition at the V&A, shared in the press announcement. “He has spent months exploring our collection and delving deep into the museum stores to gain inspiration for his new pictures, which will form the heart of the exhibition. It will celebrate the contributions of his many talented collaborators and muses too. This is a project we've been talking about for several years, and it's going to be a spectacular show.”

Eye: The All-Black 2018 Pirelli Calendar Is Perfect Timing For Tim Walker, Edward Enninful, Duckie Thot & Its All-Star Cast

For the 45th Calendar edition, the British photographer Tim Walker applied his unmistakable style of extravagant sets, helped by set designer Shona Heath with styling by Edward Enninful, now Editor-in-Chief of British Vogue.

Whoopi Goldberg joined the Pirelli cast for a 28-image calendar that significantly expanded the recent-years redefinition of the annual calendar beyond a vision of sexy, naked women eating bananas Terry Richardson style.

Enninful explains the mission of Pierelli's 2018 all-black cast:  “To see a black Alice today means children of all races can embrace the idea of diversity from a very young age and also acknowledge that beauty comes in all colours. Culturally, we are living in a diverse world. Projects like this remarkable Pirelli Calendar demonstrate that there is still hope in what sometimes feels like an increasingly cynical reality.”

Walker's post as chief photographer said that the idea of a black Alice has been with him "for a long time". In fact the story has been a big influence throughout his career of captivating, extravagant fashionable storytelling.

“I see the fashion world as wonderland,” he said. “Alice in Wonderland is a story that I have drawn upon for a long time. It has always been in my work. Alice for me is always there. I didn’t want to tell Alice as she had been told before. I didn’t want to be influenced by Disney’s interpretation or Tim Burton’s interpretation, I wanted to go back to the core of the imagination.”

Out Of Pain & Self Doubt Come Love, Unity, Truth, Golden Buddhas & An Appreciation of Tim Walker’s ‘Gilt Trip’

The Walker shoot went off in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. It was the ultimate stage set for the British photographer, known for his ‘monumental fantasy-world sets’, writes W Magazine. “When they first saw the pictures, people asked if we had built the backgrounds,” Walker said. “But, in fact, they were beyond anything I could have even imagined.”

I’ve never been to Myanmar, but seeing this editorial ‘Gilt Trip’ just now, took me back to one of the top five nights of my life … a night in Chiang Mai, Thailand when I fell to my knees surrounded by flickering candles and a golden Buddha statue.

Out of great fear and lack of control, came this extraordinary, life-altering, personal experience in the home of a complete stranger.

Beginning Again

2014 was a most challenging year for so many of us. I don’t know about you, but a huge part of me is so glad that it is over. Still, there lies an awareness in my heart that the most extraordinary gifts have come my way — many of them from total strangers. First and foremost is the spiritual teacher Mooji, whose no-nonsense discussions about the meaning of life and our journey as humans, pulled me through in my darkest hours. My dearest friend Iman is responsible for introducing me to Mooji, who metaphorically held my hand as everything seemingly solid around me in 2014 crumbled in the dust.
