Gabriela Hearst Supports Save the Children in Yemen through December 9, 2019

We might as well make it Angelina Jolie Day at Anne of Carversville. I just went to the Gabriela Hearst website searching for any additional info on the designer’s campaign to support Save the Children’s relief efforts in Yemen. Who greets me but Angelina, AOC’s founding muse who we profiled this morning, wearing a Gabriela Hearst Crowther Dress.

UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie called for an urgent response to the crisis in Yemen a year ago. More than 12 million children in Yemen are in need of humanitarian assistance. Save the Children is providing food, cash vouchers, critical healthcare services, education and protection to children and families affected by this crisis.

A new analysis by the global humanitarian organization reveals tens of thousands of children are one step away from famine. An estimated 17,000 children living in hard to reach areas in Yemen – cut off by war – are at increased risk of severe acute malnutrition and death if issues with aid access are not urgently resolved.

“Save the Children is working around the clock every day to give the children of Yemen the support they desperately need. I visited the war-torn country earlier this year, and Yemeni children are truly bearing the brunt of this conflict. They suffer from malnutrition and other illnesses, and are missing out on school and childhood,” said Carolyn Miles, Save the Children CEO. “We are incredibly grateful to Gabriela Hearst for making Save the Children’s efforts in Yemen the focus of this campaign. As we enter the season of giving, this is a unique and meaningful way for shoppers to give back and make an impact on the lives of children growing up in the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.”

From December 2nd to December 9th, 100% percent of net proceeds across all products in Gabriela Hearst flagship stores (985 Madison Avenue, New York and 59 Brook Street, London) and Gabrielahearst.com will be donated to Save the Children to support child nutrition and relief efforts in war-torn Yemen.

All Gabriela Hearst handbags, which are usually only available via request only, will be click-to-buy on Gabrielahearst.com

Some Fashion Luxury Brands Are Just Buying Carbon Neutral Status -- Not Gabriela Hearst

Some Fashion Luxury Brands Are Just Buying Carbon Neutral Status -- Not Gabriela Hearst

Carbon Neutral Buzz

The new luxury fashion buzz word in the sustainability dialogue is “carbon neutral”. Long-time sustainable brand Gabriela Hearst delivered a carbon-neutral Spring 2020 runway show in New York, and Gucci announced to considerable fanfare that “it had achieved 100 percent carbon neutrality in its supply chain and operations.” How? By buying carbon offsets writes Vogue Business. Both Burberry in London and Gucci in Milan hosted carbon neutral Spring 2020 shows, again by buying carbon offsets.

Rachel Cernansky notes that the numbers add up on paper but buying carbon credits isn’t a substitute for actually reducing emissions, and ideally they follow — not lead — actual carbon-reduction improvements in the brand’s design, sales, marketing and manufacturing and manufacturing processes.

Gabriela Hearst Sets New Standards for NYFW

Gabriela Hearst is a leader in the sustainability sector. No one tops Stella McCartney, but Hearst makes a strong showing. Vogue Business shares innovations taken by Hearst that surely aren’t happening at either Gucci or Burberry.

The designer booked only local models (see photo above) for her SS20 New York show, and this new policy will become permanent. Hearst also cut out sample production for her supply chain and — this is a biggie — the designer is shipping product via boat, resulting in a longer 10-week delivery window.

New York’s CFDA website drills down even deeper on Gabriela Hearst’s initiatives for NYFW. She teamed up with her production company Bureau Betak to track every element of the show including insuring that the food used for catering to the models used only local and seasonal foodstuffs and the models’ hair was done without using electricity.

Unable to cut down on the emissions from private cars, Ubers, and taxis delivering guests to her September 10 show, Hearst gave guests a scarf featuring a print of animals that’ve have recently gone extinct. The Gabriella Hearst brand donated funds in guests names to Our Children’s Trust, the nonprofit organization based in Oregon that has filed lawsuits on behalf of youth plaintiffs against governments, arguing that they are infringing on the children’s rights to a stable climate system. Gabriela Hearst Launches Luxury Sweater Worth $50,000 To Planned Parenthood

Gabriela Hearst Launches Luxury Sweater Worth $50,000 To Planned Parenthood

Designer Gabriela Hearst is standing with Planned Parenthood, launching pre-sales on a merino wool sweater intarsia'd that unifies a ram's head and ovaries. Vogue explains that Hearst originally conceived the sweater as her entry into the Woolmark Prize competition, which took place in Paris on January 21, the same day as global Women's Marches. Note that Hearst won the prize.

Hearst developed her Planned Parenthood support strategy when she realized the outline of a ram's head looks remarkably similar to a woman's reproductive system. “I liked that they’re both symbols of strength,” Hearst said.

“Planned Parenthood right now needs all the help it can get, and all the attention it can get,” Hearst told Vogue. For me, it’s not only about my body my choice, it’s about our overall health. They take care of our cancer screenings. They take care of so many things. And when the government is making a direct attack on women’s health… first of all, it’s appalling. And we have to do something.”

$500 of each $699 sweater will go to Planned Parenthood, and Hearst is making 100 of them. “That’s $50,000,” she underscores, with a plea for women of financial means to get out their wallets.

Hearst’s relationship with the organization is not a new one. She’s designing a dress for Cecile Richards, Planned Parenthood’s President, for next month’s CFDA Awards, where Richards will be honored with the Board of Directors’ Tribute alongside Gloria Steinem and Janelle Monae.

I've been in the fashion industry for decades and have never seen us all so mobilized on any issue. Supporting progressive causes is implanted in our brains, but the Trump administration's assault on women's rights and Planned Parenthood is a new chapter for us all. ~ Anne
