Will Andrej Pejic Topple Abbey Lee Kershaw? Culture's Gender Fluidity Moment

This late November JuicyBits summary of new posts is today’s #4 article at AOC. Based on the extraordinary interest in Andrej Pejic, I can only assume that his collective Candy Magazine editorial and not the luscious breasts of either Linnea Pihl or Abbey Lee Kershaw are behind the rise to popularity of this url.

Sorry girls. It’s Candy’s time to shine!

Launched by Luis Venegas, Candy is, “The first fashion magazine ever completely dedicated to celebrating transvestism, transsexuality, cross dressing and androgyny, in all its manifestations.”

And celebrating Candy 2, in which Andrej Pejic appeared, looking not quite so ravishingly turned out:

I’ve taken exception to Cathy Horyn’s assertion that this gender fluidity moment represents just another attempt by the fashion industry to rely on tried and true “sex sells”. Worldwide younger people are exploring and redefining sexuality in ways we don’t totally understand yet.

Being my usual provocative self, I absolutely see test tube babies in the future. We were headed that direction in the late sixties, but global Conservatives fought hard to keep sexuality and gender under its control.

That battle continues but when a nation faces plunging birth rates, as is the case in Japan and Italy, action is required. When 36.1 percent of Japanese males between the ages of 16-19 express absoutely no interest in sex — with half despising it — the world has a problem on multiple fronts.

Japan’s herbivore men are popping up around the world.

We should not assume that this gender fluidity moment is all about sex. I see the push to be about human values and identity as much as sexuality. As a writer, consultant and feminist who has begged for an expression of female-centric values, this wasn’t exactly what I had in mind lol.

One of our readers described Steven Meisel’s Vogue Italia ‘Venus in Furs’ editorial as a “giant cuddle puddle”. So true. For a bunch of naked people, there was hardly an orgy going on.

I say let’s go with the Candy fun flow and also be politically mindful that gay activist David Kato was hammered to death two weeks ago in Uganda, where the law now proposes to hang homosexuals, thanks to American Evangelicals arriving in Uganda in 2009 and unleashing hatred against gays all over the country.

Speaking of Candy, here’s the rest of the winning post. If Candy’s not your thing, Abbey Lee and Linnea will fill the need for more traditional eye candy. Enjoy. Anne
