A white male engineer at Google's Mountain View office made big news this weekend, publishing an essay that blasted the company's efforts to recruit women, people of color and other minorities into its ranks and leadership positions.

"The essay, reported by Motherboard and posted by Gizmodo, was posted on an internal Google forum by a male software engineer and titled “Google's Ideological Echo Chamber", writes The Washington Post.

The backlash has been ferocious, but many believe that the engineer's words reflect the widespread mentality among white men -- a totally dominant hierarchy in tech -- that women and other minorities do not have the mental capacity to meet the standards set by their superior white male minds and competencies..

In the case of women, the essay attributes the reasons for women not functioning well in leadership as being caused by "genetic differences" in women's life preferences and our abilities.

“These differences may explain why we don’t see equal representation of women in tech and leadership,” the engineer wrote. “We need to stop assuming that gender gaps imply sexism.”

Instead, the essay makes the case for focusing on "ideological diversity" and the "discriminatory practices" specifically against white male conservatives at Google and other tech companies.

Slack engineer Erica Baker, whom CNBC called an “outspoken critic of systematic bias in the tech industry,” said the engineer's point of view was shocking but really comes as no surprise.

“The most important question we should be asking of leaders at Google and that they should be asking of themselves is this: Why is the environment at Google such that racists and sexists feel supported and safe in sharing these views in the company?” This is the key question, says Baker, writing on her blog that it's a new day that "this employee felt safe enough to write and share an 8 page sexist screed, internally.
