Trump Inauguration: A Really Big Show It's Not As Mega Talent Hangs Tough Together
/"Broadway star Jennifer Holliday is the latest mega talent to bow out of a performance at Donald Trump's January 20 inauguration. A publicist for the 'Dreamgirls' star -- who helped close down 'The Color Purple' with Hillary Clinton in the audience last week -- said in a statement that Holliday, who was prepared to sing at an inaugural event on Thursday, declined after an outcry from fans and people in the LGBT community articulated on Friday by Kevin Fallon in The Daily Beast..
"There’s no separating the booking of any of these stars from the fact that performing at the inauguration—any inauguration, sure, but especially this one—is a political act. In the case of Holliday, it is an act that seems to defy everything her most passionate supporters stand for, and even issues she herself has supported throughout her career."
It was presented to her as a concert that would heal the wounds of the election season, according to Holliday's publicist Bill Carpenter.. She was asked to perform 'Hard Times Come No More,' originally recorded by Bob Dylan. Unfortunately, the inaugural committee released the information before she officially made a decision, Carpenter claimed.
In the past, Halliday performed for Pres. Reagan, George W. Bush, George H. W. Bush, and (Bill) Clinton, and she described herself as a healing agent after the bitter US presidential elect
Given the enmity erupting between Donald Trump and the great Civil Rights leader Ga. Rep John Lewis this weekend -- precipitated by Lewis' comments to Chuck Todd on 'Meet the Press' that he questioned the legitimacy of Trump's presidency -- Holliday surely would have bowed out by this evening. Based on new reports of Russia having the goods on Trump's bad boy behavior, millions of people don't know where Trump stands on Putin. Their bromance seems stronger than ever.
Trump's Inauguration: A Really Big Show It's Not
Private-equity investor Tom Barrack, a forever friend of president-elect Trump who is serving as his top inauguration planner, updated reporters camped out at Trump Tower last week that a lack of A-list . . . or B-list . . . performers for Trump's inauguration was not a problem. The president-elect instructed him to make Jan. 20 "about the people, not about him."
The most recent major turndown -- before Holliday -- came on Tuesday from Welsh singer Charlotte Church.
It's unfortunate that Trump's staff reached out to Church without Googling her first. Church responded in Trump's favorite mode of communication, saying on Twitter: "Your staff have asked me to sing at your inauguration, a simple Internet search would show I think you're a tyrant. Bye. "
Golden Showers & A Soft Sensuality Inauguration
Barrack continued his rapture over a different kind of inauguration ceremony for president-elect Trump, releasing a statement he surely regrets this morning -- one that has to do with "soft sensuality". Why in the world we would be talking about the "soft sensuality" of Washington DC -- which is meant to inspire in the footsteps of America's greatness as a democracy -- is beyond me (and sensuality is a professional specialty of mine).
"So what we've done, instead of trying to surround him with what people consider A-listers, is we are going to surround him with the soft sensuality of the place," said Barrack. "It's a much more poetic cadence than having a circuslike celebration that's a coronation. It will be beautiful. The cadence of it is going to be, 'Let me get back to work.' "
Poor Tom Barrack had no way of knowing that 'golden showers' would be the top trend on Twitter Tuesday night, after Trump's spygate story broke wide open.
The term 'golden showers' went viral after the revelation of unsubstantiated allegations that when in Russia, the president-elect hired prostitutes to pee in the hotel bed that offered a sleeping space for The Obamas. This was among the allegations of dirt that the Russians held about Trump that were turned over to both Trump and President Obama by the nation's top intelligence heads late last week. Man, I would have liked to be the fly on the wall in the presidential White House bedroom last Thursday night. Okay, okay . . . when they go low, we go high. ~ Anne
