Tavi Gevinson @15 & Cyndi Lauper @ 58 Are Feminists for Uniqlo

At Anne of Carversville, we know that opposites attract. The new Uniqlo ads featuring 15-year-old Tavi Gevinson and 58-year-old Cyndi Lauper share one key quality. They are both young at heart, artistically talented, women of mindful consciences with voices that resonate. If fact, Cindi probably rocks the house a bit more than Tavi — today.

Tavi Gevinson was interviewed in January by Ms Magazine. Yes, the no longer new kid on the block Rookie blogger hangs out with Ms more than Mademoiselle. Does that magazine still exist?

In her Ms Interview, Tavi is asked about SlutWalks, organized by women globally who are tired of the morality police clipping at their heels every day of our lives.  If you remember, SlutWalks was born last year in Toronto when a police official warned a group of college age women not to dress like sluts in order to avoid rape.

There is no connection between female clothes and inviting rape, as the women of Egypt will tell you. As they have adopted more conservative dress codes, the fanny-pinching continues. Women are raped under their burqas every day of the week in the Arab world.

Tavi says that she does believe SlutWalks are effective because they are more personal than political — like Walk for Choice. That was the message of Cyndi Lauper’s first big hit ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’. Note that Lauper has a long history of philanthropy in the human rights community. Check her out at CharityBuzz.

I just Googled to see if women and men are still Slutwalking, and the answer is yes. Now that the Republican Party in America has officially declared war on women, it will be interesting to see what happens this summer with marches for women’s rights.
