Scarlett Johansson Joins List Of Progressive Women Slamming Ivanka Trump For Her Silence
/The world's feminists got a much-needed dose of testosterone-infused estrogen at Tina Brown's annual Women in the World Summit. Besides a late Thursday talk by Hillary Clinton, afternoon viewers also enjoyed a sit-down between Arianna Huffington and Scarlett Johansson.
The actor minced no words in registering her disappointment with Ivanka Trump's Stepford-daughter interview with CBS's Gayle King. AOC weighed in with lots of disgust, too. For additional context, remember that Scarlett Johansson recently played Ivanka on SNL's 'Complicit' perfume parody.
The Trump daughter made word salad of her complicity -- a trait she has clearly learned from her father -- saying "If being complicit is wanting to be a force for good and to make a positive impact, then I'm complicit."
Johansson responded that Ivanka Trump "baffles me".
“You can’t have it both ways, right?” Johansson began. “If you take a job as a public advocate, then you must advocate publicly. Yesterday, she said something, which I thought was particularly disappointing, which is that she felt that the greatest change that she would make would actually be happening behind closed doors. We wouldn't actually know that she was making these changes.”
Johansson was not impressed: “I thought, ‘Well, that’s empowering.’ How old-fashioned—this idea that behind every great man is a great woman. How about being in front of that person or next to that person?”
“I think that powerful women often are concerned that they are going to be seen in this unforgiving light,” Johansson told the Lincoln Center audience of about 3000 on Thursday. “You know, screw that. It’s just so old-fashioned, and it’s so uninspired and actually, I think really cowardly. I was just so uninspired by the interview she gave yesterday.”
