Madonna Lays First Brick for Girl's Academy in Malawi
/Madonna is in Malawi, laying the first brick for the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls, a school that will educate, protect, and empower 450 young girls who are Malawi’s hope for the future, in the words of the Raising Malawi website.
As an artist, I know the transformative power of art. Malawi’s culture will be preserved and passed on through the teaching of music, art, and dance in our academy. Once instilled with pride in their homeland, young women will understand the importance of remaining in Malawi and investing in their own communities.
Education Minister George Chaponda applauded Madonna’s ‘Raising Malawi’ project for helping educate girls from poor backgrounds.
“There is continued cooperation between the government and Madonna’s charity, which is involved in several initiatives to help end poverty,” said Chaponda.
Madonna is travelling with her daughter Lourdes and two adopted Malawi children Mercy (held by Dr Jeffrey Sachs in video) and David.
On Monday Madonna visited the Millennium Village project in Lilongwe with Dr. Sachs, who is the architect of the UN’s Millennium Villages project.
