It’s a gift for us that she was prepared to be featured in this Vogue. Not only because she gave us so much of her time, but also because, above and beyond her Hollywood professionalism, she opened herself up as an approachable and profound person.’
Nicole Kidman Honored
Nicole Kidman recently received a special honorary award for her long-term social engagement for women’s rights together with Lakshmi Puri, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Acting Head of UN Women, at the Cinema for Peace UN Woman honorary dinner, held at Soho House in Berlin, Germany.
Cinema For Peace describes itself as ‘the Oscars with brains’. Speaking at the event, Ms. Puri said: ‘There is so much to do. Right now, we are looking to Egypt where UN Women has supported women since the early stages of the democratic transition.’
“At this crucial juncture, women must be part of a peaceful and democratic dialogue to determine the country’s future.”

Nicole Kidman is currently the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, charged with promoting and defending the rights of women worldwide. The actor’s specific focus on ending violence against women, links her to others like Angelina Jolie who devote countless hours on women’s issues.
Kidman has previously discussed her role with the UN, saying: ‘I have learned about the horrific scope of violence against women around the world and seen its devastating impact. ‘When I first learned that one in three women and girls experience violence in their lifetime, I was utterly shocked.’
In honoring Kidman the Board of the Cinema for Peace Foundation said:
“Women represent half of humanity, and of its potential. Yet around the world women are still deprived of a life free from discrimination and violence. We applaud the establishment of UN Women as a global champion for women and girls. Nicole Kidman has helped give a voice to countless women who are survivors of gender-based violence. She is a role model for others.”
Women of Egypt
As Egypt attempts to move forward after its recent military coup that removed elected president and Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohammed Morsi from power on July 3, a new cabinet was named that includes three women but no Islamist members. The Muslim Brotherhood has refused to participate in the new government.
The Morsi government came under sharp criticism from Egyptian women like Mervat El-Tallawy who spoke about the wave of violence against women that was unleashed when the Muslim Brotherhood came to power.
