Lubna Ahmed Hussein Deserves A Closet Full of Trousers
/Sudanese journalist Lubna Ahmed Hussein was released from prison in Khartoum, her fine paid by the Sudanese Union of Journalists. Just yesterday, Islamists were shouting ‘prostitute’ to Hussein and her supporters in Khartoum, as Lubna entered the courtroom to hear her fate.
We believe that a fine tailor in Sudan or Jordan or Morocco should see to it that Lubna has a pair of identical trousers in every color and fine fabric that suits her.
Hussein was wearing these slacks when she was arrested, along with 12 other women in a Khartoum restaurant in July.
Lubna was taken to Omdurman Women’s Prison late Monday, after refusing to pay the fine.
Anne of Carversville has been deeply involved in Lubna’s case from the beginning. Read all the details of Lubna’s case in our International Women’s Rights channel.
I’ve written two pieces this morning about Lubna and the international women’s rights movement that is gaining major steam around the world:
Lubna Freed and the Soft Glove of Hillary Clinton
Shakira & Lubna Inspire Smart Sensuality, Smarty Pants Types Saving Mother Earth, Vanilla Version
The pants you see here are a great shot used by the London Times yesterday. The intention is to show the world the trousers that were deemed “indecent” by Lubna’s morality policeman.
The photo serves a secondary purpose and that is to underscore just how capricious the morality law is in Khartoum. The ‘facts’ of Lubna’s case suggest that the woman to the left would have been arrested on the spot by Khartoum’s decency squad, as she stood on the steps near Khartoum’s most famous ‘prostitute’.
Where the arresting officers on good behavior yesterday, with the international press in town? Anne
