Sudanese journalist Lubna Ahmed Hussein was released from prison in Khartoum, her fine paid by the Sudanese Union of Journalists. Just yesterday, Islamists were shouting ‘prostitute’ to Hussein and her supporters in Khartoum, as Lubna entered the courtroom to hear her fate.

Hussein was wearing these slacks when she was arrested, along with 12 other women in a Khartoum restaurant in July.

Lubna was taken to Omdurman Women’s Prison late Monday, after refusing to pay the fine.

The pants you see here are a great shot used by the London Times yesterday. The intention is to show the world the trousers that were deemed “indecent” by Lubna’s morality policeman.

The photo serves a secondary purpose and that is to underscore just how capricious the morality law is in Khartoum. The ‘facts’ of Lubna’s case suggest that the woman to the left would have been arrested on the spot by Khartoum’s decency squad, as she stood on the steps near Khartoum’s most famous ‘prostitute’.
