Egyptian Government Invokes Islam in the First Substantial Move to Combat Sexual Harassment of Women

July 10, 2010

TIME reports that the Egyptian government has responded to the 2008 Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights report survey of 1,010 Egyptian women in which over half of the women reported being subject to sexual harassment on a daily basis. Abuses ranged from lewd comments to violent molestation.

The reports also documented the widespread belief that women are largely to blame for their harassment woes. In response, the Egyptian government has distributed 50,000 copies of “Sexual Harassment: Causes and Solutions” to 50,000 imams nationwide, with a focus on five causes of harassment and ways to deal with the problem.

While the phamphlet is not the first of its kind, TIME reports that Rasha Hassan says “It’s a big change” and one of several indicators that life may be improving for women in Egypt. Read In Egypt, Invoking Islam to Combat Sexual Harassment.

France Responds to Muslim Challenge to Reconsider Ban on Burqas

July 9, 2009

Huffington Post reports that French legislators continue to wrestle with their proposed burqa ban.

French president Sarkozy’s statements have raised the ire of Muslim groups abroad and prompted threats against France from an Algerian al-Qaida affiliate.

On Wednesday, the governing conservative party UMP head, Jean-Francois Cope, was quoted as suggesting that any ban should not be “hasty.”

Instead, he suggested a two-stage effort, “a ban preceded by six months to a year of dialogue, explanation and warnings.”

Human Rights Watch has said a ban would be counterproductive, and a top British Muslim group said Sarkozy’s comments were patronizing and offensive. Lebanon’s most influential Shiite cleric called on the French leader to reconsider his statement.

The Drug Rapamycin Promotes Longevity in Mice

July 9, 2009

Can a new drug extend life in people?

An anti-biotic drug called rapamycin, already on the market as a drug suppressing the immune system and treating certain cancers is reported to have a remarkable effect of extending age in mice.

According to the NYTimes, it will be 10 years before matters are sorted out. “It’s no longer irresponsible to say that following these up could lead to medicines that increase human life span by 10, 20 or 30 percent.”

In the Future, Men Will Still Be Useful for Something

July 9, 2009

Today’s London Times responds to news that British scientists have created synthetic sperm from sperm cells. Scientists reaffirm the fact that these sperm won’t be used for fertility treatments, although the handwriting may well be ‘on the wall’ in terms of the evolution of humanity and the future of gender relations.

Just last week, a man told me that the only thing he’s still good for is supplying sperm. Today he will be reading 101 uses for a man.

Realistically, the existing change in gender roles and now this evolutionary breakthrough in the sperm-creation dish projects a future reorientation, not only in the creation of life, but in gender relations.

Surely, synthetic eggs are close behind. A

Uganda Outlaws Genital Mutilitation

July 8, 2009

In an interesting twist of words, President Yoweri Museveni explainted that Uganda will pass a law banning female genital mutilation, which is rampant among pastoralist tribes in the country’s eastern region.

“The way God made it, there is no part of a human body that is useless,” President Yoweri Museveni told a gathering in the eastern Karamoja district.

“Now you people interfere with God’s work. Some say it is culture. Yes, I support culture but you must support culture that is useful and based on scientific information,” he added.

The argument that cultural mores aren’t sacroscant if they’re not ‘scientific’ is a welcome new twist in the balance between global human rights and interfering in another country’s cultural business.

Let me add, that I just followed extensive international information on female genital mutilation that is from 2002, and therefore I will not quote from it.

However, a quick Google search of genital mutilitation in America confirms my worst fear that genital mutilation may be growing in my country, as other nations move to eradicate it.

I will research this subject and report back. Genital mutilation is illegal in the US. But in a country that prides itself on not interfering in religious customs, we may not like the reality that is uncovered in my search. A

Naomi Campbell Is Not a Smart Sensuality Woman

July 8, 2008

Naomi is a Modern woman, not a Cultural Creative or Smart Sensuality woman.

Women’s Wear Daily reported Mon. that Naomi will be modeling fur for Dennis Basso.

Naomi Campbell is in huge company, surrounded by many Modern women who want to wear fur.

The suprmodel is not in the Carla Bruni, Michelle Obama Smart Sensuality Women’s Club which says that in today’s world — with so many devastating problems — wearing fur sends the wrong signal about who we are as human beings.

Among women generally, we agree to disagree on the subject of wearing fur. There were plenty of fur coats at the Obama inauguration.

Naomi’s case is a bit more complicated because she enjoyed fame at another time in her life modeling for PETA.

While I don’t support all of PETA’s tactics, and never condone throwing dead animals on Anna Wintour’s dinner plate, the criticism that perhaps Naomi’s best talent is promoting Naomi, is a valid challenge.

I write these words having ‘fallen on my sword’ for Naomi, insisting that we bring her to Victoria’s Secret as a model in the nineties. She’s a sensationally beautiful woman.

Does Naomi Campbell have heart? Only Naomi knows. But no cigar, in terms of her Smart Sensuality status. A

Dr. Jill Biden Promotes Community Colleges in Paris

July 7, 2009

If the enthusiasm of her PDAs for military families in Germany were a precursor of her speech in Paris, Dr. Jill Biden must have made a strong case for the critical importance of community colleges as a pillar of economic recovery and a source of retooling the nation’s labor force.

AP phots via Huffington PostThe World Bank had a similar message in a report Monday that denounces the “hype” surrounding elite universities. The report says developing countries, especially in times of recession, would be better off meeting the educational needs of their local communities and economies than trying to build world-class schools.

In her speech, Dr. Biden stressed the special relationship between developing countries and America’s community colleges. See AP: Jill Biden vaunts community colleges at UN forum.

Iran’s Clerics Create Open Mutiny

July 6, 2009

Young women protestors in Berlin; via London TimesLast week we thought Iran was going under cover again, with house arrests and trials of oppposition members. But there is no quick ‘exit stage left’ in Iran and support is coming from Iran’s largest group of clerics, who just declared President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s re-election to be illegitimate, while condemning the subsequent crackdown.

“It’s a clerical mutiny,” said one Iranian analyst. “This is the first time ever you have all these big clerics openly challenging the leader’s decision.” Another, in Tehran, said: “We are seeing the birth of a new political front.” (via London Times)

Last week, Germany’s Spiegel Online printed an interview with Iranian theologian and philosopher Mohsen Kadivar on how many of Iran’s religious leaders abuse Islam and opportunities for reform. We see today, that the opposition if far stronger than Kadivar (outside of Iran) understands.

The Cute Girl Who Doesn’t Scare Us vs The Competent Woman Who Shows Us Everything We Can Be in Life

July 6, 2009

The London Times doesn’t really care if the Brangjen triangle is real or not. Why is the story is so huge, and why can’t women get enough of it?

Do all women want to be Jennifer Aniston? Not me; and not some of the early comments on the London Times rumination on why Brangjen is a modern-day parable. Celebrity pundits and editors argue that if Jen doesn’t get Brad back, the fairy-tale dream is over. The grownup Smart Sensuality, femme fatale wins.

Perhaps the Modern Jennifer Aniston versus Cultural Creative, Smart Sensuality Angelina Jolie ‘struggle’ is a metaphor for the evolution of womanhood in our time.

… you can’t help but notice that, next to Jen, Brad looked like the protector, whereas next to Angelina he looks like her escort — the guy she has chosen to be with, until further notice. Jen and Angelina are like two halves of the sexual sandwich — one is a people-pleaser, the other one pleases herself. The only question now is which one Brad will end up with.

Not mentioned in this quote is which woman is more devoted to pleasing Brad.

The answer lies in who is the Smart Sensuality woman and whether Brad is up for dealing with her. Personally, I think Brad Pitt is up for the challenge-with-serious-benefits, but I have no credibility as a marriage counselor. And if he’s not up for it, why in the world does he have all those children. Bad Brad for continuing to fuel this global catfight. A
