Iman Abdulmajid & David Bowie for H by Tommy Hilfiger Lensed by Ellen Von Unwerth
/Somalia-born supermodel Iman Abdulmajid and her husband, music rockstar David Bowie fronted the Tommy Hilfiger Spring/Summer 2004 campaign, lensed by Ellen von Unwerth. Images like these underscore the extraordinary love affair experienced by the couple until Bowie died in January 2016 of liver cancer.
The Hilfiger campaign was photographed almost four years after the birth of the couple’s only child Alexandria "Lexi" Zahra Jones in August, 2000. Bowie also birthed a son Duncan Zowie Jones with his first wife, model and actor Angie Bowie, in 1971.
Twenty years later, Iman, the legendary supermodel, told InStyle magazine in June 2024 that she feels Bowie’s presence in her daily life.
"When people say ‘oh your late husband’ and I always correct them," Iman told the outlet in a video published on Wednesday, June 12. "He is my husband. Not my late husband. He’s ever present with me. It’s because he has left an impact in my life. He was the perfect person for me and I’m happy that I was able to experience that in my lifetime. And I wish for everybody to have that one time in their life.”
The couple’s life intersected with Tommy Hilfiger’s frequently, and the designer spoke to CFDA [Council of Fashion Designers of America] about this 2004 Ellen von Unwerth campaign upon Bowie’s death.
In the 1990s, I had the idea to try something that hadn’t been done before: my dream was to fuse the worlds of fashion, pop culture and entertainment, and I was strongly influenced by what David Bowie and Andy Warhol were doing for music and art. Through my brand, I started sponsoring tours and featuring musicians in our campaigns. David was a trailblazer and a chameleon in music and fashion, always up for anything that celebrated individuality and stood out from the rest. David and Iman had been friends of mine for many years when I asked them to collaborate on our H by Tommy Hilfiger campaign. It is one of my favorite shoots and Ellen von Unwerth really captured the ultimate portrait of rock and fashion royalty. With our shared passion for innovation and our love of eccentric, eclectic style, David inspired my life just as he inspired the worlds of fashion and music, and his passing is an incredible loss for the world.
