Bella Hadid announced on Thursday that she was joining sister Gigi Hadid and model Mica Argañaraz in creating ubuntu for the people of Ukraine and also Palestine.

Anne of Carversville is very committed to the concept of ubuntu as expressed by the great Nelson Mandela:

“There is a word in South Africa — Ubuntu — a word that captures Mandela's greatest gift: his recognition that we are all bound together in ways that are invisible to the eye; that there is a oneness to humanity; that we achieve ourselves by sharing ourselves with others, and caring for those around us.”

Bella Hadid wrote on Instagram: “To watch my Ukrainian friends and colleagues working hard here in Europe, so close but so far from their families/friends/homes in Ukraine who are experiencing one of many brutal occupations and invasions happening right now in the world is a very emotional and humbling experience for me. We rarely have control of our work schedules and this week has really shown me the strength and perseverance of the people around me who are going through pure terror. To hear their stories and emotions first hand is devastating and I wholeheartedly stand with them in support. I stand along side every person that has been affected by this war and the innocent people who’s lives have been changed forever from the hands of “power.”

“Taking after Mica and My amazing Sis, I will be donating all of my earnings from this Fashion Week directly to organizations that are providing help, refuge and medical aide to those in need on the ground in Ukraine, as well as continuing to support our Palestinian people and land.”

“Our eyes and hearts must be open to all human injustice. May we all see each other as brothers and sisters, beyond politics, beyond race, beyond religion. At the end of the day, innocent lives pay for war- not leaders.”

As always, the verbiage around the pledges is inconsistent, with some models promising to donate the profits from the Fashion Week earnings. AOC’s understanding is that the Hadid sisters are donating all their earnings — the top line revenue — to assist Ukraine and Palestine. Bella initially promised a part of her earnings, but it seems that a family decision was made by the sisters, as Putin’s devastating war on innocent Ukrainian people worsened from New York shows to London and Milan, ending in Paris on Tuesday.

According to Marie Claire UK, models Kaia Gerber, Vittoria Ceretti, Kiki Willems, Francesca Summers, and Aylah Peterson have also joined the movement and will donate part of their earnings to Ukraine.
