A Stunning Loss for Moschino and Luxury Brands with Heart: Davide Renne Leaves Our Earth
/Moschino’s new creative director Davide Renne arrived at the Italian house on November 1, 2023. Renne’s candle had no time to burn brightly in his new assignment, as the designer passed into a another dimension today, November 10, 2023.
Updated: The NY Times reports that it was a heart attack [obviously massive] that claimed his body and earthly existence just 10 days after his arrival at Moschino.
Renne’s resume was defined largely by two decades at Gucci, eventually as Head Designer of Womenswear, working with Alessandro Michele.
In speaking about his new Moschino appointment, David Renne expressed unusual affection and respect for Massimo Ferretti, Chairman of Aeffe SpA and brother to Italian brand designer Alberta Ferretti.
“Franco Moschino had a nickname for his design studio: la sala giochi - the playroom. This resonates deeply with me: what fashion - Italian fashion especially, and the House of Moschino most of all, can achieve with its enormous power, should be accomplished with a sense of play, of joy. A sense of discovery, and experimentation” says Davide Renne. “I am very conscious of the honor that Mr. Ferretti - a gentleman who has been almost fatherly in his ability to listen and establish a dialogue during our encounters - has bestowed upon me in taking charge of the House founded by one of fashion's great minds. So, thank you Mr. Ferretti for giving me the keys to your playroom. I can't wait to begin - we’ll have fun. Together”.
AOC Saw Great Potential Between Renne and Moschino
For our part, Anne of Carversville saw enormous potential in Renne’s appointment, writing:
This decision by Aeffe SpA could be a very wise one. With so much experience working as Head Designer of Womenswear at Gucci, Moschino can work with Davide Renne to position the brand as a refuge for all the wit and whimsy lovers thrown overboard with the new Gucci.
Today Moschino is grief-stricken, as expressed on their Instagram. It’s clear there was magic boiling on the stove with Renne’s arrival.
Then and Now
AOC has never questioned Gucci’s decision to part ways with Alessandro Michele — or his with Gucci. Our often-expressed concern is that Kering really doesn’t understand or value the emotional connection that many Gucci clients had with Alessandro Michele’s vision for Gucci.
In our own admission, it took Anne awhile to jump onboard with the designer — although we never doubted Alessandro Michele’s success or talent. I adored him from afar but he also disrupted me.
Emotional-connection is not a brand’s marketing word-salad, and AM gets that reality in his unconscious mind. It surges through his blood.
Today especially, the emotional brand connection is a heart-tugging appreciation and even love for a brand, one inspired by shared values as a greater priority than superficial, luxury-brand status.
Gucci appeared to devalue the Alessandro Michele emotional relationship from day one — and Kendall Jenner with Bad Bunny and a luggage cart cannot replace it so easily. It’s cute; they’re fine. The new Billie Eilish Gucci Horsebit 1955 campaign IS both heartfelt and sustainable. Good move, Gucci.
A Message From Alessandro Michele to Davide Renne
We heard from Alessandro Michele today, in response to Davide Renne’s passing. The brilliant creative shared a photo of them working together, with these words.
My sweet friend, inseparable brother, so much love. What an amazing and unforgettable journey we had together. So many laughs and pure joy. How many unconscious dreams we've been chasing. And how we hugged each other tightly, with a heartbeat. Because you weren't just one of the most talented creatives I've ever known. You were above all an irreplaceable part of a little tight-knit family. Ours, the one we chose to build with all the love in the world.
I can't help but desperately cry for you now. On this rainy day when I miss you like air, I so want to hug you and tell you, once more, everything will be okay.
Thinking that we might also hear from the New Gucci regarding the sudden death of a top designer who worked at Gucci for 20 years, it was natural for Anne to stop by.
The broom sweeps clean.

Just promise me you Gucci folks won’t jump into some version of “We Are Family” at the next fashion show. That would be a bit much. ~ Anne
