Cynthia Nixon by Cass Bird in The Sunday Times Style UK Aug. 30, 2020
/Actor Cynthia Nixon of ‘Sex and the City’ Miranda Hobbes fame, appearing soon as a politico in the new Netflix series ‘Ratched’, covers the August 30 issue of London’s The Sunday Times Magazine
Styled by Stella Greenspan in Balenciaga, Max Mara, Officine Générale and more, Nixon is photographed by Cass Bird. Decca Aitkenhead Zooms the interview, with Nixon making it very clear that she is no fan of the digital format.
“If meeting someone in person is like a meal, this is like eating Doritos all day long,” she groans. “It’s just empty calories.” We grumble about it amiably while our respective sons on either side of the Atlantic fix the technical glitches: her nine-year-old is in charge of keeping their cat out of the frame, while my ten-year-old gets my audio to work. Nixon’s face keeps disappearing from the screen, replaced by what looks like a gaming figurine. “Yes,” she confirms with a dry maternal chuckle. “It is Minecraft.”
Cynthia Nixon, who ran against New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the 2018 Democratic primary, plays a politico in ‘Ratched’. Sarah Paulson stars as Mildred Ratched, in a prequel to her character in the 1975 film ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The series opens as Mildred arrives in Northern California in 1947 seeking employment.
After securing a position at a psychiatric hospital, Ratched’s inner darkness finds new purpose in the world of mental health care. Louise Fletcher played Nurse Ratched in her Oscar-winning role in the famous movie based on the 1962 novel ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ by Ken Kesey.
Jack Nicholson played the role of Randle McMurphy, a new patient at the mental institution, in the film deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” in 1993 by the United States Library of Congress. The film was also selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
