Emmanuelle Alt’s April 2021 Mexican Fantasy

On Monday AOC shared the Inez and Vinoodh [IG] editorial of Nora Attal and Lea Meylan in Mexico. Vogue Paris EIC Emmanuelle Alt styled ‘Viva Mexico!, shot on location at Las Alamandas México two hours south of Puerto Vallarta and also Cuixmala, a luxury eco-friendly resort.

There was something very detached and retro about Alt’s EIC letter — we call it tone-deaf in America — when she wrote:

“Not so long ago, travelling was just a formality and nothing was easier than getting on a plane… Now we are staying home, going abroad has become a quest, a fantasy. We yearn for the utopia of a beach sunset! Gradually, as borders close, we find ourselves left with the essential, the power of dreaming. Imagining another city or another country does not require a passport. We wanted to accompany you to other hemispheres, at a time when spring makes us want to escape to the ocean. Let's set our bags down far away, in Mexico, the inspiration for this issue,”

The fashion shoot is gorgeous and AOC may have overlooked the name of Mexican designers, but we reviewed all the I&V images on their Instagram looking for the ready-to-wear designers beyond the usual luxury lineup.

A Fashion “Ball of Confusion”

AOC was not the only website confused by Emmanuelle Alt’s approach to the “Viva Mexico!” issue.

On Wednesday morning — with the magazine in hand at another website — we learned that there is a focus on ‘Desserto’, a cactus-generated, vegan leather in the issue — AND that some of the accessories used in the fashion shoot were made of ‘Desserto’ vegan leather.

Given the reality that sustainability is a front and center topic in fashion today, call AOC clueless as to why Emmanuelle Alt didn’t bring up Mexico-based DESSERTO® in her brief tour of the EIC Mexico-themed issue. Perhaps ‘sustainability’ is not part of Alt’s fantasy mindset — the old ways of doing things are just fine, thank-you very much.

We note that hairstylist Sam McKnight gets a call-out for his on-trend hairstyles, but one of the most exciting concepts in sustainability materials is not worth mentioning.

The good news is that DESSERTO® IS featured in Vogue Paris April 2021
