Why Blackface? A Scholar Weighs In On Why Blackface Is Part of American Culture's DNA

Blackface is part of American culture’s DNA.
But America has forgotten that.
For almost two weeks, conflict has raged over the use of blackface by two current Virginia politicians when they were younger. The revelations have threatened the men’s jobs and their standing in the community.
The use of blackface is now politically and culturally radioactive. Yet there was a time when it wasn’t.
I teach the history of blackface in the United States. Like much of America, my undergraduate students suffer from a kind of historical amnesia about its role in American culture. They know little about its long history, and they haven’t considered its prevalence and significance in everyday American life.
Most of all, they’ve never asked themselves, “Why blackface?”

Christy Turlington Burns Closes Marc Jacobs Fall 2019 Show, First Runway Show In 25 Years
90s supermodel Christy Turlington Burns hasn’t walked the fashion runway for 25 years. But Turlington rose to the occasion on Wednesday evening, closing the Marc Jacobs Fall 2019 show. Current stars like Karlie Kloss, Gigi Hadid, and Cindy Crawford's daughter Kaia Gerber also walked, but Christy owned the night, writing a lengthy post about her experience on Instagram.
"Marc Jacobs invited me to close his beautiful show tonight and I couldn't resist," she wrote. "A. I have known and loved this man since I met him at age 16. B. I turned 50 this year and have arrived at a place where "Why the F not" is the answer that comes up when I ask myself questions. C. I have a 15 year old daughter who I desperately want to see and hear me and this is a medium that 'speaks' to her."

"I needed to be with my family. And it's the same with Jason; there's a lot more communication about where we're going to be and how we're going to make things work. Both of us can't just take off like we have in the past," she says, adding that she has a very special partner in Jason.
"There have been times where it's been like [adopts whiny voice] 'Oh, you're going to work again?' Or, 'Oh, are you going to be shooting in a bikini again?' When you're a career-driven person, it works best when your partner is equally as excited for you and supportive. And that's what Jason is. He's my biggest cheerleader and I'm his."

Speaking of VS, Palvin wrote on Instagram this morning that she is back at the brand in a new campaign. With both Adriana and Alexandra gone as VS Angels, Palvin may have shoes to fill. Returning after a prior split — and surviving quite well, thank you — I think that Palvin is well-positioned to negotiate.

Lindsey Wixson’s new editorial for Stylist Magazine’s Spring/Summer 2019 issue begs the question: is she or isn’t she? Lindsey Wixson’s retirement was short-lived, when she returned in October 2018 to walk the Miu Miu spring 2019 runway show. In 2017 the Kansas-born model, discovered by Steven Meisel, announced that she was retiring from fashion due to a childhood foot injury. it’s worth noting that Lindsey also cited “changing times of this industry” as another reason she intended to “peacefully try to move on.”

Writing for The New York Times, Michelle Goldberg reminds us that when America was unsettled over a crude mail bomb being found in the mailbox of George Soros, Representative Kevin McCarthy, the California Republican who is now the House minority leader, tweeted, “We cannot allow Soros, Steyer and Bloomberg to buy this election!” Interviewed on CNN about receiving his own mail bomb, Steyer described McCarthy’s tweet as a “straight-up anti-Semitic move.”
There was no self-reflection, then, when Kevin McCarthy became a defender of Jews, threatening to force congressional action against two outspoken new Democratic representatives, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, for their criticism of Israel. Rather than rise above Kevin McCarthy, Omar found herself in the same sewer, quoting Puff Daddy’s ode to the power of money: “It’s all about the Benjamins, baby.”

In her interview with Carina Chocano, Jennifer Lopez hits all the high notes of her currently wonderful life. It’s her new video made with her daughter Emme that is most special to her in this moment. For the soundtrack of her new movie‘Second Act’, Lopez recorded a new song written by Sia called ‘Limitless’.
“Emme represents that little girl in all of us,” Lopez explains. “The minute you are born a woman, it’s an uphill battle.” In a behind-the-scenes video, you can hear Lopez shouting directions and encouragement as Emme stands up to an imaginary storm, fighting to move forward: “Good girl. Now you’re bent over. Your back foot is stuck…”
Lopez cites the video as a high point of the work she’s done to date.
