Amal Clooney may be a ravishingly beautiful style-setter, but most of her fans are equally inspired by her remarkable intelligence, professional focus on human rights, and willingness to give voice to the underprivileged.

Until now, Amal Clooney’s — and her husband George’s — intimate royal relationship has been with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, although the couple did attend a Prince’s Trust Internationall dinner in 2016. . Amal wore that spectacular yellow dress to the royal wedding last spring and co-hosted Meghan Markle’s recent baby shower in New York. The Clooneys also returned the Duchess of Sussex to England in a private jet after the shower. It’s also no secret that Prince Charles is very fond of Meghan and is eagerly awaiting the birth of his grandchild, where he intends to be very involved as a proud grandpapa.

It should be no surprise then that Amal Clooney, who made headlines last week attending a Buckingham Palace dinner with her husband, has agreed to assume a formal ambassadorial role with Prince Charles’ youth charity Prince’s Trust International. The human rights lawyer plans to launch her own prize named the Amal Clooney Award, to celebrate inspirational young women. The award is intended to “highlight the work of young women who have succeeded against the odds to make a lasting difference in their communities.”

Alright. First things first. Amal Clooney made a stunning appearance at wednesday night’s United Nations Correspondents Associations (UNCA) Awards dinner in New York City. Ignoring frigid temperatures, the human rights lawyer, accompanied by husband George Clooney, wore a “breezy, blue and white warm weather frock by J. Mendel, writes ELLE UK. As always, Amal looked ravishing.

Amal Clooney was honored as Global Citizen of the Year by UNCA for her human rights work generally and her willingness to take on high-profile cases involving persecuted journalists, often putting her at odds with the world’s repressive regimes.

Clooney seized the opportunity to address not only the global risks for journalists, but US president Donald Trump for his own attacks on the press. She referenced the mistreatment of journalists in countries like North Korea, Turkey, Brazil, and the Philippines, saying that Trumps’ actions legitimized aggression against the press.

In the words of Emirates Woman, Amal Clooney “put US president Donald Trump on blast.”

"The U.S. president has given such regimes a green light, and labeled the press in this country an enemy of the people," Clooney said, according to a video of her speech. " She continued, "In many of the cases that I have worked on too, I have seen journalists and opposition figures ruthlessly targeted so that they can no longer criticize leaders." In March, it was reported that Clooney joined the legal team representing two Reuters reporters imprisoned in Myanmar. 

Amal also paid tribute to her client Nadia Murad, an Iraqi Yazidi refugee who survived sexual abuse by ISIS and will be honored Monday in Stockholm, as a co-winner of this year’s Nobel Peace Price. Clooney and Murad have worked together in trying to make ISIS legally accountable for the genocide of the Yazidi people.

On Wednesday. the Clooneys revealed their latest initiative, TrialWatch, which will monitor court trials where there is a risk of abuse, and rank countries’ judicial systems. The project is part of the Clooney Foundation for Justice. Amal released a statement regarding their latest endeavor saying, “Today, courts all over the world are used as tools of oppression. Governments get away too easily with imprisoning opposition figures, silencing critics and persecuting vulnerable groups through the courts. Trial monitoring will shine a light on these abuses.”

Oprah, George & Amal Clooney Are Joined By The Spielbergs & Katzenbergs In Pledging $500,000 To March For Our Lives

Oprah Winfrey stepped into the philanthropy box Tuesday, joining George and Amal Clooney,in also committing a $500,000 donation and general pledge of support for March for Our Lives in partnership with Everytown for Gun Safety. The event is being organized by students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Both Clooneys will also participate in the Washington, DC demonstration on March 24, being organized by the surviving students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

"Amal and I are so inspired by the courage and eloquence of these young men and women from Stoneman Douglas High School . . . Our family will be there on March 24 to stand side by side with this incredible generation of young people from all over the country, and in the name of our children Ella and Alexander, we're donating $500,000 to help pay for this groundbreaking event. Our children's lives depend on it."

The March for Our Lives is organized by Stoneman Douglas students Cameron Kasky, Emma Gonzalez, David Hogg, Alex Wind, and Jaclyn Corin, in partnership with Everytown for Gun Safety. “I'm just a high school student,” Kasky wrote in a recent op-ed, “and I do not pretend to have all of the answers. However, even in my position, I can see that there is desperate need for change—change that starts by folks showing up to the polls and voting all those individuals who are in the back pockets of gun lobbyists out of office.”

The articulate voices of the students have overwhelmed open-minded adults across America. On Twitter, Winfrey compared the Stoneman Douglas student organizers Cameron Kasky, Emma Gonzalez, David Hogg, Alex Wind, and Jaclyn Corin to the Freedom Riders of the 1960s who “also said we’ve had enough and our voices will be heard.”

Two more Hollywood couples joined the Clooneys and Oprah in matching their donations. Producer Jeffrey Katzenberg and his wife Marilyn were joined by Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg in also supporting the initiative.

“The young students in Florida and now across the country are already demonstrating their leadership with a confidence and maturity that belies their ages," said Spielberg via his representative, Marvin Levy. "Kate (Capshaw) and I applaud their efforts to take a stand for the benefit of this and future generations. They are an inspiration to us all, and we are joining in this movement with a donation of $500,000.”

In a statement sent by representative Rachel Peterson, Katzenberg said, “(My wife) Marilyn and I are proud to stand with the brave young leaders from Parkland, Fla., who have taken their pain and grief and turned it into action. We will join Amal and George Clooney on March 24 to stand alongside these remarkable young people. We are also donating $500,000 to March for Our Lives to support this historic event.”

George and Amal Clooney realize there is work to be done in America. The worldly couple deeply involved in social justice movements in Sudan and other dire places globally have turned their attention to America, in the wake of Charlottesville. 

In the aftermath of the white supremacy marches near the University of Virginia, two organizations, in particular, are receiving support from big donors: the ADL (Anti-Defamation League) and the SPLC (Southern Poverty Law Center). 

Thanks to a $1 million grant from the Clooney Foundation, and another $1 million from Apple's president Tim Cook, the Southern Poverty Law Center is working hard to take down hate groups across America.

Motherless, displaced, traumatized, grief-stricken, and the ongoing recipient of ISIS death threats, Murad counts herself among the lucky: Of the 6,000 Yazidi women and children taken during ISIS raids, she estimated that more than 3,200 are still being held in captivity. The activist highlighted one person in particular: Lemya, a neighbor and the little sister of close friends, who was only 14 when she was taken and held in the Iraqi city of Mosul by a 34-year-old man, who both raped her and told her, confusingly, that she remained a virgin. “That always sticks in my mind,” Murad explained. “That this happened to her, and she never knew what had happened to her.”

Lemya, like so many other Yazidis, remains missing. And it’s largely for their sake that Murad has sought the help of London-based human rights lawyer Amal Clooney. Together they’re attempting to remind the world that the organized killing and enslavement of Yazidis constitutes genocide. Their goal is to wrangle the assistance of the U.N. in hopes of holding ISIS accountable in international court.

“It is a genocide, and it needs to be recognized,” Murad told me through her interpreter, Murad Ismael, executive director of the Yazidi-supporting nonprofit Yazda. “That must be acknowledged, not just for Yazidis, but for any community that suffers through this. When genocide is committed, it must be seen. People must look at it with open eyes, not minimize its impact.”

Clooney is “very involved in selecting her looks … ‘He’ll watch her try on clothes and will say, ‘I like that. You should get it,’ or ‘No, not that,’” a source close to the actor told the mag.

Amal Clooney Human Rights Lawyer

Amal Clooney arrived at the Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washing, DC on Thursday to press her case on behalf of imprisoned former Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed. Clooney appeared earlier in the day at the National Press Club. In a statement, the NPC said that it’s legal team is preparing to “make public a filing to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, urging it to find that Nasheed is being held in violation of international law.”

NY Post Andrea Peyser Jabs At Amal Clooney

It wasn’t only the row over Amal Clooney’s Golden Globes white gloves that made headlines this week. Rupert Murdoch’s New York Post columnist Andrea Peyser moved against the influential human rights lawyer over her proposed role on a three-person commission investigating rules of war violations in the Gaza Strip.

It wasn’t enough that — for whatever reason — Amal Clooney cited a too busy schedule to allow her participation — a point not clarified at the Golden Globes podium.

Could the reason be the possibility of her future husband running for political office? Whatever the reason, declining was not enough for Peyser, who criticized Amal for the following statement:

“I am horrified by the situation in the occupied Gaza Strip, particularly the civilian casualties that have been caused, and strongly believe that there should be an independent investigation and accountability for crimes that have been committed.”

AOC hates to tell Peyser that many Americans are concerned about what happened in Gaza in the summer of 2014. Israeli actions in Gaza produced a significant split in Hollywood, with actors and industry notables expressing the same concerns as highlighted by Amal Clooney.

John Galliano Returns to Runway Today

WWD reports that Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz, Burberry’s Christopher Bailey and milliner Stephen Jones are expected to attend the event.

Jones says that the event will occur at 4:30 pn London time at a “warehouse space in Westminster”.” It’s ‘Teatime’,” explained Margiela spokeswoman Jade Guishard, “which is very English.”

Perfect Timing?

If Guishard is right and timing is everything in life, Galliano might wish for a different day to showcase his work. The impetuous, alcoholic design talent, who has received major support from Vogue’s Anna Wintour and supermodel Kate Moss in his recovery, faced a deadly public relations backlash over his antisemetic, drunken February 2011 rant at the La Perle cafe in the Marais.

Unfortunately, the Marais is also the location of Paris’ terrorist attack at a kosher supermarket, with four dead bodies now headed for Israel, rather than burial in France. Anti-Semetic attacks and incidents in France more than doubled during 2014, says the French Ministry of Interior. About 7,000 French Jews moved to Israel from France in 2014 up from 3,300 in 2013. It’s believed that 15,000 French Jews will migrate to Israel this year, writes Middle East Eye.

Note that anti-Muslim attacks have also increased in France and throughout Europe over the same period.

Whether current events will impact the viability of Galliano’s return to fashion design will be decided after the first collections are shown. Galliano may no longer be relevant as a designer, writes The Guardian. Certainly his theatrical, over-the-top designs have no place at Martin Margiela. After phase one’s focus on the clothes, European retailers will decide whether or not to embrace again fashion’s bad boy now enjoying a revitalized, sober life based on values that resonate — or so he says.
