Mexican-American actor and singer Melissa Barrera first watched then-unknown Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ‘In the Heights’ musical on a Model UN trip to New York City. Unsure if she should leave her home in Monterrey, Mexico, to pursue an acting career, watching ‘In the Heights’ gave Barrera the confidence to chase her dreams.

Fast forward to now, and Melissa Barrera stars in Jon M. Chur’s movie adaptation of ‘In the Heights’, playing Vanessa, a focused, headstrong woman determined to become a fashion designer.
