AOC checked for a brief sustainabiity update on Mango’s website. Mango proudly states: “ 79% of our garments already have sustainable properties. By 2022, it will be 100%.”

This is good news but let’s be mindful of what the sentence says. It says that some aspect(s) of the garment is sustainable. That could be the major fabrication of a dress — or the thread, labels and poly bag, the way we read the message. The message does not say “79% of our garments are 100% sustainable.”

All progress is good, but as ardent activists trying to transform the fashion industry remind us, specifics are important. AOC does not consider these statements to be greenwashing. As consumers we also have an obligation to ask the right questions and be mindful of all the aspects that define a dress as being sustainable from its fabric to its shipping container.
