Actor Charlize Theron was scalding, an absolutely over-the-top fire goddess in W Magazine’s May 2015 cover story ‘Mad Beautiful’, styled by Edward Enninful in images by Mert & Marcus.

We have followed Charlize Theron since we first learned about the South African-born actor who earned an Academy Award for best actress for her performance as a real-life serial killer in Monster [2003] and founded in 2007 CTAOP [Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project].

Charlize Theron Meets Congo’s Dr. Denis Mukwege

The actor’s UN work brought her to the Congo in 2010 to meet with 2018 Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Denis Mukwege, founder of Congo’s Panzi Hospital for Raped Women and a close advisor to nearby ‘City of Joy’. Dr. Mukwege is a surgeon specializing in vaginal fistulas a muscular tear in internal organs caused by violent rape, so brutal that women are often left unable to control their bladder and rectum.

Mukwege thinks that fistula is one of the worst conditions a woman can experience: “A fistula is dramatic for a woman,” he told CNN in a 2009 interview. “Everywhere she goes people don’t want to be around her and reject her, so it’s a disease that is worse than leprosy.”

AOC followed up with stories about Dr. Mukwege, women’s rights activist Christine Schuler Deschryver and American playwright Eve Ensler, author of the ‘Vagina Monologues’ and founder of V-Day. Their ‘City of Joy’ is a residential physical and psychological healing center, and also skills learning center for women recovering from unspeakable sexual assaults as part of daily life in the Congo.

The Panzi hospital and ‘City of Joy’ safe harbor, recovery center for Congolese women are located in close proximity to each other.

Schuler Deschryver is the director of City of Joy, working with staff to oversee day-to-day operations, while Mukwege serves as an adviser and Ensler helps to fundraise and raise awareness.
