We are fascinated with evolving trends in male sexuality, many of them focused around what we consider as female-centric values. Alexi Lubomirski photographs Tyson Ballou in this month’s issue of GQ Japan.

In what is historically one of the most patriarchal cultures on the planet, there is a strong trend in Japan where men are called herbivores. These young men are closely aligned with nature and have little interest in dating or marriage.

In a recent government-sponsored sex survey in Japan, one-third of Japanese men aged 23-34 said they had no interest at all in sex. They have good women friends but romance and courtship holds no interest for them.

Given Japan’s negative birth rate, the herbivores are becoming a national challenge to the future of the Japanese nation. Note also, that young Japanese women are delighted with their lives as single women and not eager to marry either.
