The location is Rudolph Tegner Museum north of Copenhagen. As a sculptor, Tegner appears to be a footnote in history, but for me his visual narrative is stupendous. From a brief search on the artist, nothing is written about his subconscious expressing itself through the scultpures. Tegner’s work is described as provocative — but moreso in being so classical and opposed to the cleaner, simpler Danish aesthetic.
Here’s a a 2007 narrative by a British sculptor, who is as astounded as I am by Tegner’s work and its low profile in the art world. I’ve never seen any artist capture deliberately or subconsciously the fall of women in classical Greece with such visceral, agonizing power,. The Biblical battle of the sexes and women as devouring serpents but also strong warrior women, who ultimately are subordinated to the male figures are breathtaking. And I don’t know about his sculpture!
Was the truth of Rudolph Tegner’s art just too difficult to handle? I am quite dumbfounded but will further research his work. If you have any thoughts, references or ideas, please share them with me. ! ~ Anne
