Inside Tommy Hilfiger’s New York Penthouse
/Tommy Hilfiger’s New York City penthouse is as glamorous and elegant as you would expect it to be. It overlooks Central Park and 5th Avenue, which makes it among the most coveted spots in the Plaza Hotel. The celebrated apartment also has access to one of the only two domes in the building. The four-bedroom duplex covers 6,000 square feet of pure luxury.
Upon entering the unit, you'll be greeted by a spacious salon that has a view of the city skyline via its floor-to-ceiling glass windows. There's also an alcove library with animal-print walls, custom bookcases, and a comfortable reading seat flanked by plants. The home office has paneled bookcases, a leather chair, and an animal-print carpet – the perfect setting for creating artistic work.
The unit’s pièce de résistance is the dome room, which has been turned into a tea room. A mural by Hilary Knight, author of ‘Eloise at the Plaza’ adorns the walls. It livens up the otherwise drab brick ceiling and brings a positive ambiance through light colors and adorable illustrations.
Each bedroom has its own theme, reflecting specific personality traits. The first room has a lavender fields theme, austerely designed with sharp angles and squares, giving an edge to the relaxing color scheme.
This contrasts sharply with the eccentric and playful shapes in the nautical-themed bedroom. It features a boat-shaped bed and chandelier and has furniture and decor that evokes the feeling of being in a pirate ship’s cabin.
The third bedroom (above) has a rock ‘n’ roll theme, painted in black and white, as well as a Gothic-looking chandelier.
Lastly, the master’s bedroom rocks a regal vibe, with two dressing rooms and a decorative fireplace. It also has its own private terrace, and the bathroom has a spa-inspired layout.
The penthouse is still up for grabs. The Wall Street Journal explains that the Hilfigers bought two units for $25.5 million and merged them into one unit. They then spent $20 million on renovating the unit’s French-Renaissance style. The couple initially listed the property for $80 million, but have since lowered it to $50 million.
While the steep price tag could be off-putting for a lot of prospective buyers, it seems that Tommy Hilfiger is still open to negotiation. The designer did reveal that he has had offers on the property: “One I didn’t accept and the other the guy didn’t come up with the money. I’m of the belief that if it sells, it sells. If it doesn’t sell, I’ll just keep it."
Dramatic changes in price aren’t uncommon when it comes to luxury real estate and fierce negotiations are common among the buyers and sellers in this rarefied housing market.
Factors like inflation, socioeconomic events and even public sentiment commonly affect the rates of luxury properties. This information is taken into account when conducting market analysis, and New York realty firm Yoreevo explains that brokers use the results of this market analyses to determine a reasonable asking price for a property. Discussions between buyer and seller go on until they agree on a mutually-acceptable price. Negotiations are always flexible, and Hilfiger appears to be just waiting for the right buyer.
