In all honesty, camels and Australia never went together in our inquiring minds at AOC. Camels are not native to Australia but the country’s wild camel population is the largest in the world.
It was the working life of camels, and the camel drivers or cameleers, that opened up the Australian Outback, with young camels old enough for light-weight work at age three. Camels typically work until age 40, with their original drivers coming to the Australian outback mostly from Afghanistan, but also from Pakistan and the Turkish Empire.
Not being camel experts in the least, we can’t attest to the ‘fact’ that camels must be working to be happy. But the suggestion is that PETA should stand down before assuming that three-year-old camels are abused and need rescuing.
