I’m privileged to own this book treasure, and admit to not making the connection, probably because I was consumed with the religious references. I saw the red ribbon as a cross.

If you don’t know the history of the orange X-marks, when Stern showed Marilyn the contact sheets, she was so unhappy with her physical looks that she took a marker and defaced all the images that she detested.

They became a Marilyn story in their own right. Of course the orange and red crosses remain connected.  Anne
