AOC admits to associating windmills more with the Netherlands than Denmark, and for an instant, we expected a huge “thanks but no thanks” to American Vogue for fashion editorial ‘exposure’. Numerous headlines out of Europe in the last few days suggest that the Netherlands are drowning in tourists.
Thankfully, a quick check on Sean Thomas’ Instagram created facts around the fashion shoot, which actually took place in Solvang, CA. Founded in 1911 in southern CA’s Santa Ynez Valley, Solvang is known for its Danish-style architecture and many wineries.
If Twitter types will just do their homework like AOC, Bella Hadid will be spared another grade A tongue-lashing by the ‘Hadid sisters Twitter trolls’. Then again, Bella may get yet another digital kick in the tush, because who searches for facts before Tweeting. AOC, that’s who !! PS, having been driven off Twitter in 2012 by white male political foes showing up in the lobby of her apartment building, Anne stays off Twitter.
AOC was not overreacting about the kitch Vogue editorial. ‘We must act now’: Netherlands tries to control tourism boom is the May 6 The Guardian headline. ‘Strategy may involve tourist tax and closing down attractions in crowded regions. ‘
The Netherlands population is 17 million people, and tourism in 2018 was 18 million. The present forecast for 2030 — just 11 years away — is for an influx of 42 million tourists, leaving the country’s tourist board to say that it has had enough.
To the best of our reading — and The Guardian’s, plus many other news sites — there is nothing anti-people, or anti-groups of people in this Dutch cry for help. Simply stated, the Netherlands is drowning in the success of its own tourism strategy, and the quality of life for Dutch citizens is being destroyed. As are important monuments to Dutch history.
“We say that ‘more’ is not always better, certainly not everywhere,” a Dutch tourist board policy document states. “To be able to control visitor flows, we must take action now. Instead of destination promotion it’s time for destination management.”
