/Carine Roitfeld has a flashback. 1999. Alek Wek was busy breaking barriers. Lara Stone entered the Elite Model Look competition, Lily Rose Depp, was born and Carine Roitfeld was having a seminal year. This is the focus of Carine Roitfeld's issue 11 of CR Fashion Book. She writes: "1999 is about a spirit of independence, and there are very few independent thinkers left today. I think right now a lot of people are looking back to this period of time. Not only to find references or get ideas, but to see who they were—how good they were—and hopefully see who they can be again.”
We note that Carine's father Jacques Roitfeld, a Russian émigré film producer who worked in Berlin before moving to Paris, died in 1999. Carine describes him as her idol.
Not a re-issue: Four NEW covers: Stone and Depp by Steven Klein, while Wek and Cara Taylor are photographed by Mario Sorrenti. Plus, CR Men’s issue 5 features never before seen images of Prince also by Steven Klein.

First up is Lily-Rose Depp by Steven Klein—the now-famous offspring of ‘90s It couple Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis—featuring an interview with Natalie Portman, her costar in the upcoming film Planetarium. “Carine actually styled the first shoot that I did for Chanel when I was 15,” Depp told Portman. “This time I got to show off a little more skin and be a little more sexy. I had just turned 18, so I was ready to up the ante.” We recall the star saying on set that she felt more like herself than ever during this shoot, having drawn inspiration from her model mother who Klein had also photographed. "He had shot these amazing photographs of my mom when she was my age. We shot in front of a mirror with the pictures taped to it. We have a similar grungy look."
Preview: Kim Kardashian Channels Lil'Kim and Pamela Anderson
To pay homage to their 1999-themed issue, hitting newsstands on September 7th, CR Fashionbook No. 11 reimagined some of the most iconic celebrity looks from a time when the red carpet ruled. 1999 saw its fair share of these moments, and Carine's team tapped photographer Petra Collins to give fans her take on all of the greats. Among them, was rapper Lil' Kim whose mermaid-inspired purple pasty moment at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards is still considered one the most memorable looks of all time. As the only female member of the hip hop group Junior M.A.F.I.A. the Queen Bee was wise to use fashion as a way to steal the show and Kim Kardashian—who counts Lil' Kim as a close friend—is no stranger to such tactics herself. In the second image, Kim channels P.E.T.A.'s biggest supporter Pamela Anderson, who famously traded in her red swimsuit for a slew of show stopping red carpet looks in the '90s.
