In his interview, stylist Panos Yiapanis expresses skepticism that fashion could be turning away from the size 0, no hips and no breasts body type preferred by fashion for the last 20 years — since the takedown of the original supermodels.
Hence, he envisions this fetishized fashion story of females leaping far beyond having breasts and hips and a derriere into the land of all powerful, hyper-exaggeration of female body parts.
If you know mega artist John Currin, you’ll see his influence in the images. And Steven Klein is a lover of strong, sexy women on a consistent basis and always with respect. No one pushes the envelope like Steven Klein, but I never find his images demeaning. Nor do I always find them liberating. I think Klein has excellent insights into the sexual power of human interactions.
This psychology runs so deep into the layers of our unconscious minds that it has its own formidable power — and both men and women can resent it. Women are more often than men to be the focus of the resentment, and Steven Klein understands this reality in his bones.
Klein creates deeply psychological narratives for both women and men as a form of self and social exploration about how we view each other. What’s important to me is that I never detect an undercurrent of misogyny in Steven Klein’s images — and goddess knows my radar is highly-tuned to this issue. ~ Anne
