Frederikke Sofie In 'The Braid Is Now' Is Lensed By Michael Baumgarten For Vogue Italia December 2015

Model Frederikke Sofie showcases women's history through the metaphor of braiding (and very blonde hair) in this Vogue Italia December beauty editorial. Braids were a huge trend in Spring 2016 shows, appearing even at Celine's always-polished show. AOC always looks for historical references in fashion editorial artistry. But Vogue brings us down to earth saying: "With its singular purpose and clean, uncomplicated lines, it promises to cut seamlessly through the clutter of a busy life.

Photographer Michael Baumgarten is behind the lens with styling by Enrica Ponzellini. Angelo Seminara is in charge of hair with Lisa Eldridge on makeup.

In fact, the cultural significance and historical roots of braiding are tracked to the beginnings of human civilization and Africa. Braiding techniques appeared on fashion accessories, but also home products and decorative textiles. In Africa, braiding indicated a person's community, age, marital status, wealth, power, social position and religion. Because braiding takes much time to execute, it became a social art and center of community activity.
