Svetlana Zakharova Squares Up For Nikolay Biryukov In Elle Russia April 2013

In the most creative interpretation of spring’s game winning trend (black and white, if you haven’t caught that yet) Nikolay Biryukov stages his shoot for Elle Russia on an oversized chess board and makes blonde bombshell Svetlana Zakharova his main player. As assortment of metaphors and analogies ran through my head as a I considered ways to relate chess to fashion (ex: we’re all just pawns of the fashion industry or make your fashion move for spring) and on a whim I googled ‘chess quotes,’ naturally not expecting much. To my utter shock there are pages and pages of quotes online relating to chess, which can then be broken down into categories such as ‘Politics,’ ‘Psychology’ and ‘Queens.’ But the words of chess champions Aaron Nimozowitsch and Vasily Smyslov actually moved me. Respectively, their quotes are: “The beauty of a move lies not in its appearance but in the thought behind it.” and, “In my opinion, the style of a player should not be formed under the influence of any single great master.” So, take a note from the great chess masters (and stylist Renata Kharkova) and spin spring’s trends your way.
