Carine Roitfeld Taps Kate Upton for Rebirth Editorial in CR, Roitfeld's New Magazine
/Kate Upton frolicking with little naked babies in front of Bruce Weber’s camera isn’t really an attempt to say that babies are the new black — although former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld is a new grandmother. The theme of Roitfeld’s first issue of her semiannual magazine CR is Rebirth — and we are talking about her own.
“I was obsessed seeing my daughter becoming a mother,” Roitfeld, 57, says, sitting in the loftlike offices of Stephen Gan, who publishes V and Visionaire and is helping to bankroll her new venture. “And when you’re obsessed with something, you see it all around,” Roitfeld says in her signature patois. “And so maybe it was a good moment for me. It’s like a rebirth, too.” via TDB
It’s rumoured that former bosses at Condé Nast have warned photographers to stay away from Carine Roitfeld’s new venture because???? Because Vogue Paris had become all about Carine Roitfeld, writes Jacob Bernstein.
At AOC, we are huge supporters of Carine Roitfeld and believe that Vogue Paris is a shadow of its former self without her at the helm Most recently, an ounce of sensuality has been reintroduced into the pages of the former must-read for Smart Sensuality women.
Despite the threats from Condé Nast, Karl Lagerfeld has stood by his long-time friend, photographing Linda Evangelista, Stephanie Seymour and Carolyn Murphy as heroines of the ‘Nouvelle Vague’. Gucci collaborator and dear friend Tom Ford wrote, styled and photographed his own fair tale ‘Lucho and Juliet’, writes the NYTimes. Amanda Harlech is a stylist and Richard Avedon’s grandson Michael is a photographer for the first issue.
Though she certainly has nothing to prove, Ms. Roitfeld is doing a lot of things differently and taking risks. Besides the flip concept, all of the advertisements are spreads, rather than single pages, and they are arranged alphabetically by brand names. There is no “front of book,” the dutiful features about product news and trends; instead, that information will be presented online. That leaves more room in the 340 pages for the good stuff, like an essay by Anne Hathaway about her fertility, or a fashion feature about Elsa Peretti. On every page you can see that Ms. Roitfeld was down in the trenches; and, indeed, she was present for the shoot with Mr. Weber. via NYTimes
When the topic is rebirth, many women are up for the event. If anyone is up for the challenge of leading this effort on behalf of smart, sexy, caring women with heart — it’s Carine Roitfeld. Good luck, CR. ~ Anne
